Excerpt:
Making It Up to
Maggie

Harrison increased his grip on the steering wheel of his SUV to a stranglehold.
It was the only thing keeping him from jumping out and grabbing Maggie,
throwing her in the back seat, and
driving off with her. Sanity prevailed, but it was a close call. He marveled again at how a slip of a woman had
infiltrated his psyche and undermined his self-control, not to mention teaching
him so much on the subject of himself. Before he’d gone and royally screwed
things up.
She stood outside the doors of the office building with two of her
friends. Even at a distance, he saw her
energy and light while she conversed animatedly with Veronica and Joyce,
although he’d noticed shadows beneath her eyes and a certain gauntness
hollowing her cheeks whenever he’d been able to get closer to her.
Her blonde hair streamed around her shoulders in the gusty wind, and
her dress was pulled tightly against her long, slender frame, molding her high
breasts and the slight, swelling roundness of her belly. His baby was growing
there.
Harrison was missing out on every wondrous day of that burgeoning life
and the woman he desired and loved more than anything else in the world. Missing
out because of his stupid masculine pride and ego.
He closed his eyes against the pain in his heart and the clenching of
his gut. He didn’t know what else he might do to make amends for his atrocious behavior, to regain Maggie’s trust. Nothing. He had to accept that. He would
do his best to care for her, provide for her and his child, but from a
distance. He was his father’s son, after all, and she deserved better, as did
their child. He’d proven he had nothing to offer outside of the basics and the
superficial because blood would tell. As would nature over nurture.

Begging Briana

Tossing several items of clothing into her suitcase, Briana Jeffries
then found a plastic makeup bag to stick a few toiletries in. It had taken a
long time to accept the obvious but she’d finally accepted the fact Caleb
wasn’t going to miraculously profess his love for her. Tonight had been the
kicker.
She ignored the ache in her chest and concentrated on packing the
things she needed, not that there were a lot. No way was she going to think
about what was true. Except she couldn’t turn a blind eye. She loved Caleb and
he didn’t love her. There. She said it again and that made it true.
Swiping impatiently at the tears suddenly streaking her face, she
zipped the bag closed, taking a final look around the bedroom she shared with
the love of her life for nearly three years. Too bad she hadn’t been the love
of his. It was time to move on. Christina would be outside by now.
Hurrying down the stairs of the place she’d hoped would be her forever
home, she steadfastly ignored all the little things she’d done to make it so,
especially the plethora of pictures. The reflection of beautiful places and
events, smiling, happy faces, pictures of her and Caleb, mocked her despite her
best efforts not to look. Caleb must be blind not to see what they had between
them, captured for the world to see, but apparently,
it was her love that was blind. After
throwing open the front door she hauled her case outside, barely avoiding the
rebound of the heavy wooden panel as it slammed shut behind her, her keys now
locked within. Final. No going back.

Interview With the Author

What is the Electric Desert Nights series about?

Electric Desert Night is a series of three short stories all set at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. It is a three-night event where DJs from around the world come to play various styles of electronic dance music, or EDM. Being a lover of EDM myself, I had the pleasure of attending the carnival this year and was amazed at how huge the venue was. There were seven stages total and all of them were packed with people! Each night runs from dusk till dawn (yes, I did see the sun come up a couple of times). Anyway, while I was there I couldn’t help thinking what an ideal place it would be for paranormal creatures to come and feed on humans. And, bam! That was how the series was born. You never know when inspiration will strike, lol.

In each book of the series a paranormal being is brought together with a human, and each experience is a discovery of an underlying connection between them.

Who was your favorite character to write?

Somer, the incubus, was my favorite. He’s just kind of a cheeky, comical, fun-loving incubus. He seemed to speak all on his own in my head. I myself am the opposite of him so it was interesting how his description and dialogue popped up out of nowhere from the very beginning.

Your series includes a vampire, an incubus, and a ghost. Why have several paranormal creatures?

I know most authors stick to one at a time. But I find it hard to believe that only one paranormal creature can exist in the world. If vampires can exist, why not the others? I don’t think having a ghost was too much of a stretch. Even in our world today there is a ton of evidence to support the existence of ghosts. I guess I just don’t like limitations. I actually loved the way the three of them played off of each other and had their own unique stories to tell.

Why write short stories? Why not full length novels?

I write all lengths of books. It’s really up to the story to let me know how long it wants to be. I am at its mercy, lol. But I think short stories are great for lunchtime breaks or waiting rooms or other times when you just need some quick entertainment. At minimum, I hope my stories provide readers a break (from whatever they need a break from) and let them experience something they never actually would in real life.

Here’s a little snippet from my story in this collection, Sweet Addiction!

            “Thank you for walking me.”

“Of course, everyone knows how shifty this town is,” he winked. “I wanted to make sure you didn’t get abducted or roughed up by one of the street gangs from the senior’s home down the way.”

“Wow… I had no idea,” she had a tough time keeping a straight face. “I guess I better stop walking around with my knitting needles and bags of yarn, it’s just asking to get mugged.”

“It’s okay, I’ll keep you safe,” he managed with his most serious tone as they came to a stop in front of the stairs to her apartment. Declan moved in closer, taking her other hand, twining her fingers in his own.

“That’s very nice of you,” her breathy whisper made his own heart beat faster as he searched her face for permission to do what he was aching to.

****

Sasha felt like she could barely breathe, the warm spicy scent of Declan surrounded her as he leaned in closer. She’d spent most of the night wondering if his lips would be as soft as they looked, and she was now almost desperate to find out.

“Well,” his green eyes searched hers before they wandered lower, seeming to follow her tongue as she absently ran it over her lower lip, “I have to admit, it’s partially a selfish motivation—if you get attacked by senior citizens, I wouldn’t be able to do this…”

Declan’s mouth softly touched her own, and she sucked in a breath. His skin was so warm everywhere it moved against hers, and without her even realizing it, her fingers were suddenly tangled in the silky black hair at the nape of his neck. He seemed to approve if the low groan that escaped him was any indication, and when his tongue rubbed against her lips, she eagerly opened, loving the wild taste of him.

“Sasha,” the low timbre of his voice made goosebumps wash over her body, “you feel so perfect in my arms.”

Those words only made her control unravel even faster, and she pulled his mouth back down to her own, exploring as ardently as he was. She felt a wall at her back and realized he’d backed her into the alcove beside the door. When his body finally stopped, she could feel the hard length of him against her stomach, and her body flooded with heat, knowing that he wanted her as much as she ached for him.

She moved her hips closer, and Declan swallowed her groan as the hot ridge of his cock moved against her sensitive clit, setting off a round of fireworks in her body. One of his large hands moved along her back until it settled comfortably on her ass, pulling her even closer as his talented mouth moved to nibble along the side of her neck.

Sasha couldn’t think, her body was on fire with need for this man, and when his lips stopped moving, she couldn’t stifle her whimper of protest. Declan’s forehead moved to rest on her own, and she loved that he was as breathless as she was. He also hadn’t let her go, and the feel of his strong frame against her own was almost as intoxicating as his kisses.

“I need to go… before I end up doing something on the street my momma would kill me for.” He sighed loudly before placing one more, gentle kiss on her lips and stepping back to release her. “I have dinner with my parents tomorrow, but can I see you on Tuesday night?”

Sasha didn’t really trust her voice at that moment, so she simply nodded, still incredibly distracted by this man’s presence. She wanted to take his hand and drag him up to her home… to her bed, but she’d never been the aggressor before in sexual situations, and as soon as she hesitated, the old voices in her head undermined her passion.

“Do you want to come for dinner?” she cleared her throat and smiled up at him. “We could watch a movie after?”

“I’d love to, that sounds perfect.”

He leaned down and placed one more kiss on her lips, groaning as she kissed him back before he retreated once more. “What are you doing to me, Sasha?” The whispered words made her smile as he opened the door and watched her walk up the stairs to her apartment.

“I have no idea…” she muttered back, her libido on fire and a perma-grin on her face.

I might not know exactly what I’m doing, but whatever it is… I know I want more of it.

Blurb:

The opportunity to build her own future and start over is exactly what Sasha needs. Moving to the small town of Digby to open up a pastry shop is more than enough to make her happy, or so she thought. What she wasn’t counting on was the sexy rancher that seems to have quite an interest in her, for far more than her baking skills.

Sasha has exactly what Declan needs to take care of his sweet tooth, and any other hungers that may arise…if she has the courage to show it. He’s figured out that Sasha is gun shy when it comes to men, but with some patience, he hopes to sneak past her walls and show her that he’s in it for more than just dessert. When his past comes calling, will Sasha open up and trust him, or will she shut her heart down for good?

The sweetest rewards sometimes have to be fought for and Declan Boone isn’t going to let his sexy little baker slip through his fingers.

BONUS SCENE!

“Sasha, Caroline is here from the paper for your interview,” Daphne popped her head through the kitchen door, “should I send her back?”

“Ugh, I forgot about that,” Sasha cringed at the idea of having an article done on her for the local paper, but Daphne thought it would be good for business, so she’d reluctantly agreed, “Sure, send her back.”

The middle-aged woman looked more like a kindergarten teacher than a reporter, but in a town this small, there was a pretty good chance she was both.

“Sasha! So great to meet you, I’m Caroline Barker from the Digby Daily News. Thank you so much for agreeing to answer a few questions about yourself. As Digby’s newest resident and entrepreneur, the whole town is positively buzzing about all the delicious creations you make here!”

“Oh, no problem,” she couldn’t stop the nervous laugh from passing her lips, “though my life isn’t really all that exciting. I can’t imagine someone wanting to read about it in the newspaper.”

“Well honey, in a town this small… Mr. Cooper forgetting to put out the trash so he has to run to the corner in his boxers to avoid sleeping on the couch for the night, is news. You’re positively enthralling. A big city gal, starting a dream business with her best friend… perhaps finding love along the way? Hmm?”

Sasha froze, not knowing what to say to that. How in the heck did some stranger know more about what was going on with her love life than she did?

“Daphne and I have been hard at work since we opened, it’s been wonderful how supportive all the folks here in town have been. Who has time for love when there’s pastries to be made?” She answered with a wink, before she slid the plate with a fresh éclair in front of the woman and hoped like hell she could be distracted by chocolate.

“Oh now, no need to play coy,” Caroline’s eyes did light up as she eyed the dessert, but alas, she was like a dog with a particularly tasty bone, “word around town is that a very handsome rancher has been courting you… and it’s not just because he has a sweet tooth. Grammy Boone seems to think that Declan’s set his sights on you, she said so at bridge club just last night.”

Sasha’s mouth dropped open in shock, only in a small town would bridge club gossip from old ladies be a ‘hot story lead’ for the newspaper.

God help her, this is so embarrassing! Did running into someone in public places like markets and grocery stores really count as courting? Who in the heck used the word courting anymore anyways?

“Umm, well I can’t speak for Declan, but I can assure you… I’m not dating anyone right now.”

“Oooh, how exciting!” Caroline grabbed her hands before she could pull away and was practically jumping in her excitement, “A single gal on the prowl, I’m certain all of our local boys will be quite interested to learn that. Get ready to be the most popular lady in town, my dear! Declan better get ready for some competition.”

Craptastic. Well that certainly backfired on you Sasha.

Daphne poked her head through the kitchen entrance once more, and Sasha audibly sighed in relief, thinking her bestie was there to rescue her from this small town personal-space invader. Her relief was extremely short-lived however as soon as Daphne opened her mouth.

“Sash, I just saw Declan park over at the grocery store…” Daphne waggled her brows suggestively, “Twenty bucks says he comes in here next, better fix your hair.”

“Oohh! The intrigue!” Caroline’s giggle grated on her nerves.

“Shit.” Her first thought was that she’d never convince this reporter now there was nothing going on, but her second?

“Wait, you heifer! …What’s wrong with my hair?” Sasha yelled back at her now snickering best friend.

Recipe Intro:

Let me start off by saying I am not a great cook, baker, or candlestick maker, 😉 so the dessert recipe I am sharing with you was actually prepared by my fourteen year old niece for one of our big family dinners. This girl can definitely bake because these mini cheesecakes were absolutely delish.

Recipe:

Vanilla mini cheesecakes

Ingredients
1 cup crushed graham crackers
3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp sugar, divided
4 Tbsp melted butter
3 8 oz. packages cream cheese, softened
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
3 eggs, room temperature
1 cup whipping cream (or heavy cream)
1 cup raspberries
1/4 cup confectioners sugar

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F
2. Combine graham cracker crumbs, 2 Tbsp sugar, and 4 Tbsp melted butter. Press onto bottoms of 18 paper- lined muffin cups. Refrigerate until needed.
3. Beat cream cheese, vanilla and remaining sugar with mixer until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition just until blended. Do not over blend
4. Spoon batter into crusts.
5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until centers are almost set. Cool completely. Refrigerate 2 hours.
6. Beat whipping cream with mixer in medium speed until stiff peaks form. Do not over beat. Add confectioners sugar and mix together with standard whisk.
7. Spread whipping cream onto cheesecakes. Top with raspberries.
8. Enjoy!

I am no kind of cook. If I can take something out of the fridge or freezer and put it in the oven or into a saucepan, I’m all good. Otherwise, I’m not interested, LOL. Having said that, though, I can be tempted to “make” some things…

Recipe:

Oreo “bark” (nothing to do with your dog):

Ingredients:

Oreos

Large bar of white chocolate

Method:

Crush the Oreos into small pieces

Melt the white chocolate, then stir in the Oreo pieces

Put the mixture in a flat baking tray of some kind and spread it out so you have a huge flat slab of chocolate/Oreo mix

Allow to cool in the fridge

Eat

This can, of course, be switched up easily to include your favourite types of chocolate and favourite “fillings”, but the combination of the flavours here is amazing.

As the manager of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, the safety of the men under his control was the most important thing to Cooper. That was until Dr. Honor Jennings stepped from a helicopter and proceeded to show him that playing it safe wasn’t always the best way forward.

When Honor arrived onboard the rig, she was fully prepared to uncover the safety breaches an anonymous source had advised her were taking place. She was completely unprepared for her reaction to the rig manager. The cold-blooded murder she witnessed came as a downright shock!

Can Cooper keep Honor safe with a murderer on the loose and a storm keeping them isolated from the mainland, or will the risk prove too much and cost them everything?

Recipe Intro

THE LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOON LAMINGTON

Now, the lamington is a kiwi icon.  An afternoon tea delight that reminds me of lazy Sunday afternoons spent with my family, making these for school lunches, but taste testing a few for quality assurance purposes only — honest!  My Aussie authors in this fabulous boxset might contest and argue that the humble lamington is theirs but trust me… this is all Kiwi!

Recipe:

INGREDIENTS

Sponge Cake

½ cup self-raising flour

½ cup plain flour

½ cup wheaten cornflour

6 extra large eggs, at room temperature

1 cup raw caster sugar or just plain caster sugar

1 Tbsp boiling water

15g butter

4 cups shredded coconut (for rolling pieces in)

Icing:

100g dark chocolate

¾ cup water

2 cups icing sugar, sifted

1 cup cocoa, sifted

½ cup milk

METHOD:

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C conventional or 170°C fan forced. Grease a 30cm x 29cm lamington tin. Line the base and sides with non-stick baking paper, allowing it to overhang slightly.
  2. Sponge cake Sift the combined flours three times into a bowl. Using an electric beater whisk eggs in a large clean, dry bowl until thick and pale. Gradually add raw caster sugar or caster sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition until mixture is thick and sugar dissolves.
  3. Sift the combined flours over the egg mixture. Combine butter and boiling water and pour down the side of the bowl. Use a spatula to gently fold in until just combined.

Pour mixture into the prepared tin. Bake for 20 -25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn cake onto a wire rack to cool. Place in an airtight container. Cake is best made the day before cutting.

  1. To make lamingtons Cut sponge cake into 18 pieces. Put coconut into a wide bowl. Make icing by combining chocolate and water in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Stir until chocolate has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
  2. Sift icing sugar and cocoa over chocolate mixture, stir until smooth. Add milk and mix until well combined. Work quickly as chocolate sauce will thicken on cooling.
  3. Using a large fork, dip sponge cake pieces into chocolate mixture, drain slightly then roll in coconut. Leave to set on a tray.

Recipe Intro:

My mother always told me the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. My husband would not disagree. So when I started writing my first romance novel, Someone Special, my heroine made an epic first impression with a plate of to-die-for chocolate chip cookies. My readers were up in arms demanding cookies to satisfy their urgent cravings. How could I refuse? I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as they have.

Recipe:

Dani’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
3 cups of flour
1 t baking soda
½ t salt
1 c butter, softened
½ c granulated white sugar
1 c brown sugar, tightly packed
2 t vanilla
2 eggs
1 c semisweet chocolate chips
1 c dark chocolate chips
½ c walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla until pale yellow and fluffy, either with a mixer or a wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together and add to the wet mixture. Mix until well combined. Add chocolates at the end and mix again. Drop heaping teaspoons of dough two inches apart on greased cookie sheets. For larger cookies, use a measured 1/3 cup and flatten a little before baking. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. If you want them soft, remove them when lightly browned. Let them go a little longer for a crisper finish. Leave them to set on the baking sheet for 1 minute before moving to a cooling rack. Makes 6-7 dozen, depending on size.

Down & Dirty in the kitchen with London Saint James #DownandDirty #D&D @romancerebels69 @LSJRomance

Today we have fellow Down & Dirty anthology author, London Saint James, here to share one of her favorite recipes, as well as her story, Destiny Happened.

When it comes to luck in love, well…let’s just say I had none. That is, until the day I kissed a stranger.

Destiny Happened Blurb:

Desi
Of course, I noticed Mr. Shirtless. With a bod like his, who wouldn’t? But his hot-factor didn’t matter. What did? My asshat ex and the need to make him jealous. So, I strolled up to the panty-melting stranger as though I knew him and laid one on him, hoping said asshat would see I’d moved on just fine without him. Only, he never saw me kissing another man.

Kash
I spotted her—honey-blonde hair gleaming in the sun as she came my way. I’d flirt. Smile. Maybe get her number. I sure the hell didn’t expect her to toss her arms around my neck, mashing her body against mine, and kiss the ever-loving shit out of me. Then, she stopped. Stepped back. Blushed. Whispered “Sorry” and blended into the crowd.

I never got her name that day. Or her number. However, fate had other plans and Destiny happened…again.

Recipe Intro:

I will confess. I am a chocolate lover. Yes, I love the stuff. And you know what? I happened to catch a man—or maybe he caught me *Wink*—who loves to indulge me. Soon after we first met, he made me a chocolate pie from one of his grandmother’s recipes. I knew then he was a keeper.

Recipe:

Deliciously Decadent Chocolate Pie

Ingredients

Makes Two Pies

  • 2 pre-made pie shells (this saves time but for those of you who love to bake, feel free to make the pie shells from scratch)
  • 2 cups of white sugar
  • 2 heaping tablespoons of self rising flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/3 cup of Hershey’s Cocoa
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 4 cups of whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 large tub of Cool Whip topping

Directions

  1. Pre-bake the pies shells in your oven until golden brown and flakey then let them cool.
  2. In a large bowl mix all the dry ingredients together, white sugar, self rising flour, salt, and cocoa. Blend well.
  3. In a large sauce pan mix the eggs yolks, the whole milk, the vanilla, and the butter together. Add all of the dry ingredients once the better melts completely into the liquid ingredients. Stir well over a medium heat.  Do not let the mixture stand without continuous stirring until the contents becomes thick.
  4. Once the pie filling has reached a thick, chocolaty consistency, pour the filling into the pre-made, pre-backed pie shells.
  5. Let the pies cool. Once the pies are cool, add Cool Whip to cover the top of the pies. Then serve, and enjoy.
