SOLD by Doris O’Connor @sirenbookstrand @mamaD8

Thanks so much for having me on your blog with my new release Sold. This is book one in a new Vampire Series, The Vampire Games, where vampires of all ages find their curvy human heroines. Things are never straightforward at The Games, but kink, heat and ultimately love are always guaranteed. J
I had such fun writing Atlan’s and Evie’s story and am knee deep in book two of this series, where you will meet Henri and Jo.
For now, though, the stage belongs to Atlan and Evie and their journey.
As one early review said:

“A perfect mixture of a little drama, tenseness and growing love. Will Evie make Atlan realize that he can have love in his life? Get the book and find out for yourself!”

[Siren Sensations: Erotic Contemporary Consensual BDSM Paranormal Romance, vampires, M/F, HEA]
Evangeline Prewitt has had better days, weeks, and quite possibly months. A rent increase on top of a huge car repair forces her to seek out her boss for financial help. His solution? Enter The Games.
Evie has her doubts about being sold off to the highest bidder—who would want a plump waitress? However, desperate times call for drastic measures. Besides, it’s only sex. What can possibly go wrong?
Atlan St. James seeks out The Games for a little distraction. This three-hundred-year-old vampire is drawn to the delicious human bundle of curves the minute he sees her. Evie will be his, at least for the night. What neither of them counts on is the instant connection between them. After all, sex is easy. Emotions are far more difficult to negotiate.
As far as Atlan is concerned, the only solution is to let his precious angel go.
Evie, however, will not be dictated to.
The game is on.

STORY EXCERPT

Evie shifted, uncomfortable under Atlan’s intense gaze as he watched her eat. After that spectacular fuck against the kitchen counter, which had left her spent and breathless, Atlan had surprised the hell out of her. It had been enough of a shock to discover that he hadn’t bitten her that time because her orgasm had been just as intense as the ones she’d had the night before. He could have easily drained her dry, and she would have been none the wiser. The fact that he hadn’t, had taken his time to clean her up gently with a warm washcloth, before picking her up and depositing her at the kitchen table, and had proceeded to serve her dinner…well, a girl could get to love that treatment.
“You’re not eating?” she asked now, and he smiled at her over the red wine he’d been sampling.
“I fed well last night, my sweet, and while I can ingest food, I don’t need it. I don’t have to pretend with you, so I’m simply content to watch you eat.”
Heat rose in her cheeks, and an answering warmth spread between her thighs at his knowing look. Everything felt super sensitive down there, not helped one iota by the fact that she was sans undergarments. The pretty lingerie she had been wearing hadn’t fared too well in that impromptu fuck fest against the counter. His nostrils flared in that subtle way he had when he was sniffing her, and lord help her, she was soaking wet again.
Atlan’s grin deepened, and he picked up her abandoned fork, speared another morsel of the succulent chicken on it, and held it up to her lips.
“If you want me to fuck you again, you need to eat up.”
Evie dutifully opened her mouth and resumed eating with him feeding her until her plate was clear. There was something incredibly intimate about the act of being fed by your lover, and by the time he stopped she was a panting, horny mess, again.
“This is insane.” Her whispered words made Atlan’s fangs run out, and everything inside of her clenched in need.
“What is insane?” he asked.
Evie took a deep breath in and grasped hold of her wine glass instead of giving in to her hormones and straddling the man, demanding that he fuck her right here and now.
Instead, she took a deep gulp of the expensive red and shook her head.
“How is it possible that I want you again? I’ve had more orgasms over the last twenty-four hours than I had in the last year, and here—”
Atlan’s laugh cut her short, and she slapped her hand over her mouth, mortified at what she’d just said.
“Don’t be embarrassed. If that really is true, then the men around you must be blind fools.”
It was her turn to laugh, and Atlan’s brows drew together in a frown.
“I mean it. You’re a beautiful, vibrant, sexy young woman. You should have men queuing around the block to take you out.”
Evie shrugged and kept her gaze on the lines running through the wood of the table.
“No queues, I assure you. No one wants to take out the fat girl.”
Atlan’s furious growl shook the table. It should have been terrifying to see him like this. Right now, with his fangs fully extended, his amazing eyes a swirl of dark brooding clouds of gray, blue, and glowing yellow, he looked the epitome of all things evil. He also looked sexy as hell. Evie didn’t even try to justify her emotions, because deep down in that Atlan-sized shape he’d carved in her heart, she knew his anger wasn’t directed at her, that he would never harm her.
“That is the most fucked-up thing I ever heard, and believe me, I’ve heard all sorts of shit over the last few hundred years.” His voice held that deep delicious growl that made her want to sink to her knees and beg him to do to her whatever he pleased. However, sex didn’t seem to be on Atlan’s mind at the minute. “If you weren’t still sore from yesterday, I would pummel that gorgeous butt of yours until you see sense. You’re everything a woman ought to be. Soft, with curves in all the right places. No man wants to fuck a bag of bones and give himself friction burn, trust me on that, sweetheart.”
Evie blinked at the unexpected endearment. He still looked far too intense, and her heart turned over in her chest with all the pent-up emotions bubbling around in there, so she had to lighten the mood.
“You know how that sounds, right? You’re now discriminating against skinny chicks and—”
“This is such fucking bullshit.”
His snarled response cut her off, and before she could even blink he’d pulled her to her feet, flung her over his shoulder, and they were racing up the stairs at dizzying speeds.
She gasped in awe when he slid her down onto the floor and she realized where they were. On top of the house in his art studio. With the lights off and the shutters down, the night sky with its multitude of stars blinked down at them. The full moon hung in the middle of it all, heavy and blinding in its intensity, and it filled the space with an eerie, supernatural glow which added to the whole breathtakingly stunning ambiance.
Evie put her hands out and spun around in a circle, utterly transfixed by the spectacle of nature.
“Oh my gosh, this is beautiful.”
“Yes, it is.”
Atlan had lost his annoyed tone, and when she glanced at him, it was to see him watching her, not the scenery.
ADULT EXCERPT

She gasped and stopped talking when he cupped her pussy through the sodden lace and found her clit at the top of her hood.
“Not God, sweetheart, just your average three-hundred-year-old vamp at your service.” Atlan dropped his voice as she clenched her thighs, and her hips surged downward to seek more pressure from his fingers.
“You’re…oh, please, don’t stop…you’re three hundred? And oooh, I…”
Instead of answering her, Atlan caught her screech of surprise in his mouth as his lips crashed over hers at the same time as he pushed the underwear out of his way and sunk two fingers knuckle-deep into her clenching core. Her internal muscles grasped his digits, and he thrust in and out of her cunt while he kissed her senseless.
Evie didn’t hold back. She flexed her hips and whimpered her need into his mouth while kissing him back with the same fevered urgency he experienced. The buttons on his shirt pinged off in all directions in her haste to get him undressed. Her fingernails scored his skin, and the sweet pain made him lose what little control he had left. Atlan took over, wrenched his lips off hers, and flipped them so that she was underneath him. Having pinned her hands back above her head and secured them with the restraints attached to the headboard, he yanked her downward, so that all her bountiful curves were his for the taking.
Her eyes widened when he divested himself of the rest of his clothing, and he groaned in relief when his dick sprang free. Evie’s corresponding whimper of need and the way her gaze snared on his erection made him even harder.
“Oh. My. God.”
Evie licked her lips, her gaze riveted on the action of his hand as he stroked up and down his length slowly. He tapped her thighs in a quiet command, and when she immediately opened to him, displaying herself, he smiled.
“That’s my good girl. You’re so fucking wet already. Tell me, my angel, how badly do you want my cock?”
He gripped himself harder, ran his thumb through the drops of pre-cum coating his thick head, and used the natural lubrication to work his dick harder. Evie started panting and tried to close her thighs, but he was having none of that. He swatted her pussy once and his girl tensed and groaned.
“Please, I…”
Her reaction made him do it again, and again. Her eyes closed, her head thrashed from side to side, and each well-placed slap brought her closer to release. To see her writhing on the bed, so close to release, so utterly inhibited in her responses, made him ache to be inside her. Atlan gripped the bottom of his shaft hard to stave off his own release, as one last well-placed and much harder swat meant she tumbled over that edge with a scream to bring in the neighbors, had he had any.
Luckily his staff knew better than to intervene, and that was the last conscious thought Atlan had before he ripped off that sodden lace, which prohibited his view of her juicy pussy, buried his face between her thighs, and lapped up her need.
Grasping her luscious ass cheeks, he lifted her up and drank down her arousal. Evie didn’t disappoint as she locked her thighs around his head and rode out the multitude of orgasms he wrung from her. Atlan latched onto her clit and sucked that little hard nub into his mouth while he sank his teeth into her moist flesh. Evie went wild underneath him, the scent and flavor of her life essence mixing in with her cum, as she screamed her release. Atlan released his hold on her clit, licked the wounds closed, and tunneled his tongue into her clenching hole instead, while he took her arousal all the way back between her ass cheeks to that little ring of muscle guarding her other entrance.
He rimmed that tiny hole, as she tensed her hold around him and pulled on the restraints tethering her to the bed. By the time he breached her butt with his tongue, shoved several fingers into her pussy, and fucked her with his fingers, she flew again.
Atlan murmured his encouragement into her perspiration-soaked skin, as he licked a path back up over her quivering belly until he reached the heavy mounds of her breasts. Circling each nipple in turn, he bit down lightly, leaving his teeth marks on the soft tissue. Only when she started to whimper and plead for him to stop, did he align his aching cock with her slick entrance and thrust deep with a groan of his own.
Her quivering cunt muscles closed around him like a hot, wet fist, and Evie gasped. She arched her head back, offered her delicate neck for him to take, and without thinking about anything but the need to make this woman his, he sunk his fangs into her neck while he started to fuck her in earnest.
Evie screamed and shook as her blood filled his mouth and her pussy sucked him in deeper. Harder, faster, he drove into her soft body like a madman, intent only on seeking his own release, satisfied with the knowledge that she met him thrust for thrust, until they came together in a mind-shattering orgasm, which took over every atom of his body, as she convulsed under and around him.

Excerpt:

“I mean you no harm, lady. You can go. I’m only here for what’s in the car,” he said slowly walking towards her. She was a cute little thing, all soft curves with golden skin and hair.

“Ummm, yeah, about that … I’m what’s in the car, Mr. Krescech. You have to take me with you out of here,” she said almost nervously, those big green eyes pleading with him.

Clearly, she was also insane. What was with the women he was running into this week? Viktor had had more than his fair share of groupies throwing themselves at him in the bars, wanting to take a walk on the wild side for a few hours, but this wholesome little beauty certainly didn’t look like the type, so he had no idea exactly what she was asking him for.

“I don’t think so,” he said, moving past her towards the open back door to search the car.

“Seriously, there’s nothing else in the car. They were taking me from my family and my pard to be married to Conrad. I have to go with you to get away from him,” she continued, putting her tiny little hands on her very curvy hips in a way that distracted him far more than it should have.

Interesting, so this little number was a leopard shifter? Viktor hadn’t really had any interaction with the pard in this country, but by reputation, they were a good lot. Why on Earth would she agree to marry Conrad?

“I don’t rescue damsels in distress. I eat them,” he said with a flash of fang. “So run along, little kitten.”

The tiny spitfire threw her hands dramatically up in the air and sighed loudly.

“You just saved me from a life of baby-making slavery. Aren’t you supposed to whisk me away to your super-secret villain lair and ravish me? Sheesh, where’s your follow-through?”

Viktor just stood there and stared at her for a moment. He didn’t know whether to laugh at her ridiculous statement or take her up on her offer and bend her over right here on the trunk of Conrad’s car. He was extremely turned on by the fact that she didn’t seem the least bit afraid of him. He’d always tried to pretend that his reputation in the paranormal community pleased him, that it helped him by keeping the rabble away. But deep down it bothered him that everyone always thought the worst of him. His honor was just yet another thing that Melisandre and Conrad had stolen from him when they took his mortality.

“Don’t you know who I am, woman?” he finally said as she just stood there looking at him expectantly.

“Yes, I know who you are. Who else is capable of keeping me out of Conrad’s douchy hands?” she said sounding a little impatient.

“Don’t you have a family you can go to?” he asked, still wondering why he was even standing here talking to her.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true. Once she’d said the word “slavery” he knew he couldn’t leave her to Conrad’s tender mercies. Viktor knew more about slavery than he ever wanted to, and no being should ever be held against their will. That and he had seen firsthand what Conrad enjoyed doing to women. It still sickened him to think back to the horrors he’d had to witness as Melisandre’s pet.

“If I go back to my family they’d just have to hand me right back over to him again. My pard owes him a blood debt, and I am the payment. I need this to look like Conrad’s men lost me in the confrontation with you. This needs to be his fault, as otherwise, it will start a war between my family and his coven,” she said, stepping ever closer.

She stood so close now that Viktor could smell the strawberry and coconut scent of her shampoo. Good Gods, she smells good enough to eat.

“Why would you think that I should care whether or not this starts a war for your people? I will not be fighting in it,” he answered, trying to sound like he didn’t care one way or another.

“Because I think that you hate Conrad just as much, if not more than I do, and there’s nothing he wants more than to possess me,” she answered quietly, her huge green eyes staring right into his grey ones.

She was right of course. There was no one on this Earth that he hated as much as he hated Conrad. That’s what he told himself anyway when he ultimately decided he would take the girl with him—whether it was the whole truth about his motivations or not.

“First, tell me how your pard was thoughtless enough to enter into a blood debt with a killer like Conrad?”

“It’s not like we had any choice. My father was jumped one night by a bunch of rogues, and Conrad just happened to be there to offer his assistance … for a price.”

The venom in her voice clearly stated that she suspected they’d been set up. The rogues were most likely paid to attack by Conrad himself. It was a trick the coward had used over and over again.

“Fine,” he said with a sigh. “You can come with me, but just until we find somewhere to stash you that Conrad cannot reach you.”

“Thank you!” she said with a squeal just before she reached up and hugged him before he could stop her. “I’m Halle, by the way.”

Clearly, his reputation was never going to recover from this if anyone saw him being hugged in the alley, but with her luscious frame leaning against his, smelling so sweet, he had a difficult time finding a reason to care.

Excerpt:

“Fuck, you’re so wet,” he growled before rubbing the pad of one finger in circles around her aching clit.

Her hand was still stroking up and down his cock, and when his fingers dipped lower, finding her entrance, Bella groaned, biting down on his shoulder. Fuck, she needed his cock inside of her.

“Pants off,” she panted and released him.

In seconds, he had her jeans and panties stripped and his own thrown across the room as he knelt in front of her. The intensity in his eyes was enthralling as he growled again and then lunged at her. She wasn’t frightened, though. On the contrary, she knew she was about to get fucked and fucked good.

His arms scooped her up, and then they were both bouncing on the large king sized bed. Immediately he moved down her body, his hands pushing her legs wide open and up as he settled himself in between them. She didn’t even have a second to anticipate what he was about to do before his mouth descended upon her pussy, licking and nibbling over every single inch. Two thick fingers plunged into her core, thrusting in and out as he sucked her throbbing clit in between his lips. It was a full-on assault of sensations, and before she even knew it, her entire body was coiled in preparation to come, her hands tightening their grip in his hair as she pressed her hips harder into his mouth, and when he bit down on her clit she screamed as the orgasm echoed through her core. The waves of pleasure ebbed over and over again until his mouth finally released her.

“Holy fuck,” she whispered as her eyes closed and she struggled to catch her breath.

“Nah, we’re just getting to that part,” was his cheeky answer as she felt him kiss his way back up her torso until his weight settled in between her thighs.

Bella could feel the throbbing heat of his cock pressed against her pussy. She was so wet now that it easily slid through the swollen lower lips, causing small tremors to pulse through her womb in aftershocks. His arms were on each side of her waist, holding him above her, and she rested her hands at the top of his ass.

“Look at me, little cat.” His voice was still rough with his desire. “I want to see your golden eyes as I take you.”

She slowly opened her eyes, and her lips broke into a lazy smile, her hand coming up to rest against his cheek. She loved the thick stubble she felt there—it had felt even more amazing against the inside of her thighs. His deep green eyes seared her with their gaze, and it felt like he was looking right into her soul as he pulled his hips back and found her entrance. She sighed as he slid his thickness into her slowly as if he was savoring the feel of her around him. It seemed an oddly sentimental moment for such a sexually aggressive male, and not normally one she would appreciate from a bed partner—but something was different with this one.

Once he had pushed himself all the way inside of her, a low rumble had once again begun to come from deep inside his chest as he lifted her legs to slide his arms underneath them. Her breath caught as he pulled her closer, his balls nudging up against her ass, and then he began to move. He pulled all the way out of her snug heat, and then slammed back in, his gaze never leaving hers. Bella’s hands held onto his forearms, grasping at the only part of him she could reach as he began to thrust in and out of her, over and over again. She could feel her fangs dropping as her cougar snarled inside, encouraging the male to move faster, to fuck them harder. His own teeth were now visible as well, and sweat rolled down his face and chest as he worked her. His wide, thick cock didn’t miss a single nerve inside of her, and her body lit up with pleasure. Every stroke seemed to take her higher and the harder he took her, the more she needed.

“Harder, more…” she groaned out, her claws unsheathing from her fingertips to grab into the flesh of his arms.

Suddenly he growled and released her, slipping out of her sheath abruptly, but before she could complain, he had flipped her over onto her hands and knees. He pushed her legs apart and slid back inside, his hands now over her shoulders, using the leverage to pull her back onto his cock at a furious pace. Well, she’d asked for harder, and boy, did she get it.

The intensity of his fucking made her inner animal go crazy, wanting to claw at him, to mark this partner in her fury of lust. Over and over again, his shaft thrust inside of her, and she would have done anything to feel the release of his seed into her waiting center. When one of his talented hands finally moved back down, around her hip and pinched her swollen clit, her pussy spasmed around him, trying with everything it had to take him with her.

With a furious roar, he followed her into bliss, the hot jets of his seed coating her insides. At the same time, she felt his teeth bite deep into her shoulder, and her cat roared as well inside her head, telling her to sink her own teeth into this male—to bite him and mark him as theirs for the entire world to see.

Wait … what the hell did my inner cat just say? Mark him?

Fuck!

“Mine…” he moaned, his cock pushing deep inside of her once more. “You’re mine now, little cat. My mate.”

Double fuck!

BLOOD OF ANGELS by Amber Morgan @AmberMothling @evernightpub

Hello! Thank you for having me today and letting me share a teaser from my new release, BLOOD OF ANGELS. I loved writing about my Southern belle, Thea, and her fallen angel, Turiel. There’s something so appealing about writing an angel as a romantic hero. I’m not sure what it is – maybe a sense of the taboo? Angels are supposed to be pure, spiritual beings, after all, not the kind to get down and dirty with us mere mortals. Is that why we love reading and writing about angels discovering love and sex? Or is there just something irresistible about a man with wings?

Well, sadly, Turiel has lost his wings, but I think if you asked him, he’d say it was worth it for what he finds with Thea… 😉 I hope you love reading their story as much as I loved writing it!

Thea Clayton knows her life isn’t normal. But even she wasn’t prepared for an angel to fall through her roof.

Turiel gave up his place in Heaven to experience true sensations for the first time in his immortal life. He didn’t realize that meant pain as well as pleasure.

Thea isn’t the only person who knows Turiel has fallen. The blood of angels is a precious thing. And some people will do anything to steal it.

Turiel
reached down between his legs, stroking himself with slow, leisurely
movements. His eyes fell shut, his shoulders relaxing, and she was
reminded of nothing so much as a cat basking in the sun, warm and
lazy. She watched his hand move, watched his shaft stiffen, and
wondered if it was an invitation to her. Last night he’d seemed so
broken, so lost, too much so for her to contemplate sex. A few hours’
sleep shouldn’t make that much difference. He still was what he was.
A miracle, a masterpiece, a fallen angel…But he was somehow also a
man.

She felt like driftwood on the
seas, battered around by her conflicting emotions. He opened his eyes
again, watching her watch him. A slow, shy smile spread across his
face. “I trouble you.”

It took her two attempts to
answer, and when she did, her voice was throaty and trembling. “In
a way.”

“I don’t want to upset you,
Thea.”

“I’m not upset.” She
was spellbound. He was no Louis Lee, that was for sure. She wanted to
wrap her hands around his thick cock, wrap her lips around it, taste
that silken, golden skin. She wanted it with a fierceness that was
too much to handle and yes, it troubled her.

“I can leave,” he said.

“You still don’t have any
clothes,” she said.

“Does that trouble you? You
seem preoccupied by it.”

He was teasing her. There was a
studied insouciance in his voice and she found herself smiling. “I
am hopelessly preoccupied by your lack of clothes, absolutely.”

He bit his lip and reached out
for her. He took her hand in his and guided it to his waiting shaft.
Thea gasped, breathless, as her fingers closed around him. Velvet and
warm, he was, like a well-aged whiskey made flesh, and she closed her
eyes as she stroked him, enthralled. She felt reckless, careening
towards a cliff-edge with every touch. This was the madness that
would take her, she
decided. Not alcohol or paranoia, but the searing
touch of angel’s flesh.

He closed his eyes, expression
rapturous. “You will make me mad,” he murmured.

She
said nothing, growing bolder and firmer in her strokes, revelling in
the knowledge that she was pleasing him. This work of art, this
divine creature, who surely could have fallen anywhere in the world
and had men and women flock to him, he was here with her, and it was
her hand, her touch putting that shine in his face, stirring his
body. It was a powerful knowledge and it lead down a dangerous path.
What else could she do? What else did she dare do?

It might have been enough to stay
like that forever, him kneeling in a tangle of bed sheets, Thea
laying alongside him, her hand caressing his cock with an
ever-increasing possessiveness. Turiel sighed and whispered in that
fluid, alien language, and she had a sense of time crystallizing
around them like sap into amber. They would stay perfect and
preserved like this forever, and that might be enough…but he made
her hungry and he wanted to feel, to touch, and there was so much

Hotter than Hell and eager for sin…

Mallory is having a bad year, even for a succubus. Her adorable dog has transformed into the Devil himself, and she can’t catch a date without someone dropping dead in her wake. Now a hot shifter detective is on Mallory’s trail, and things are about to get dicey. Even a trip for a cut and curl can’t ease her spirits. After Mallory rescues a dog in distress, her luck might finally be turning around. Sometimes the one you save saves you right back, and maybe that sexy investigator will turn out to be exactly what she needs as well. But someone from Mallory’s past has a score to settle, and her hot new boyfriend may just end up on the menu.

All that glitters could be murderous…

Detective Bryce Richardson is a werewolf on a mission. A murderer is stalking the city streets, and all signs point to one very gorgeous lady with a string of one-night stands and a growing pile of bodies. Watching her with her blind rescue dog tugs on his heartstrings, and he finds himself falling for his chief suspect, hook, line, and sinker. A true mate is hard to find and when his animal speaks, he’s learned to listen. But can Bryce keep his head long enough to solve the murders, or will he be next in the killer’s sights?

Excerpt 1:
Bryce watched the blonde woman sitting alone at the table on the outskirts of the bar. Nursing his drink, he sloshed the remaining amber liquid in the glass and pondered going over and talking to her. Pretty and petite, he had a feeling she would be interesting to talk to. At one point, she’d met his gaze and something tripped inside him, making the bold comment he’d planned sink into wordless nothing.
His wolf howled, pacing beneath his skin, definitely interested, the call to mate nearly boiling under his skin. Was she any different than the others? Barflies, he was learning, were not helping in his search.
There was no mystery as to what that meant in the shifter world. His animal had found a woman he wanted as a mate. But that didn’t mean his human side necessarily agreed. He should be gearing up to go to his pack’s gathering, but none of the females had caught his interest. And if not now, he couldn’t imagine that would change in the two months when he was expected to go. All unmated wolves were required to attend.
Fuck that.
His mate was right here, staring him in the face. But she wasn’t a shifter, and he had to take care. It would have been so much more simple if she had been. Chemistry would have taken over, and that would have been that.
If he were smart he would walk away and just plan on going to the gathering. But there was something about her, drawing him closer like a fly to honey. He’d walked by the table earlier, and her scent had snared him, his cock hardening.
Huh. Fly. The irony of the thought made him cringe.
Bryce had seen her here once or twice before, but she’d been with two guys. The one from before and another guy. They’d always laughed and had a good time. But today she’d been down, barely meeting the other guy’s conversation from the looks of it.
Interesting.
His wolf rumbled in his chest, unhappy with his choice to remain an observer. But something told him all wasn’t as it seemed. As soon as the thought came, it went as he watched the woman his wolf wanted as a mate.
He’d brought other women home, but it was always her in the back of his mind. No matter the curves. But damned if she wasn’t always dating some other guy. The man she was with before had gotten up and left, but she’d stayed. Was she meeting someone here?
She’d danced with one of the guys from the bar, but one song later and she was back at her table, a new drink in hand.
It was now or never. Before some other asshole decided to get in his way.
And he was tired of keeping his distance.
Fuck it.
He stood, his pulse thrumming under his skin and made his way over to her table. Her blonde hair cascaded down around her heart-shaped face, her eyes twinkling with merriment as she took him in.
“Is this seat taken?”
She glanced up at him, a smile playing at the corner of her lips. “Not anymore.”

Excerpt 2:
The little dog rested against Mallory’s chest. Exhausted from the events of the day, she carted her purse, the bottle of pills, bowls, a bag of kibble, her new prescription cards and the cans of wet food the vet seemed to think were must-haves all the way up the stairs to her second-floor apartment.
The vet had woken them both up after about an hour to check the pup’s progress and then carted him away for a quick bath. The dog returned to her promptly, tail wagging, and they took off, the scorch marks still steaming from her credit card.
Ouch.
She could do this. Be the person the little guy needed. He didn’t have anyone else.
Yeah. And that’s worked out so well for you in the past.
She willed her internal voice to shut the hell up. Pets were different than men. And dogs were different than a goldfish. They told you when they were hungry. Or at least she thought they did.
He’d slept peacefully on the seat next to her all the way home, and when she stopped, he barely perked up as she jostled him and the rest of her parcels to her front door. Finagling her keys, she kicked the door open with her foot and shut it unceremoniously with her mud-covered ass.
“There.” She tossed the bags onto the kitchen counter and carried the little guy back with her to the bathroom.
“Shower time, kiddo.”
This was going to be weird. Mallory nibbled on her lip and pondered what to do with him while she was in the shower. Terrence wasn’t a problem. She knew what to expect from him, but this little, unnamed pup was something else entirely. The vet had also told her to make sure there was nothing that he could run into and hurt himself. After her shower, that was right up there on the list.
She lowered the little dog down on the floor, towel and all, just inside the bathroom and hustled to the bedroom closet to divest herself of her clothes. She felt disgusting. Covered in mud and hair and God only knew what else, it was time to get clean.
A yip sounded down the hall, and she hurriedly stripped. Dropping her clothes in the hamper, Mallory streaked back down the hall to the bathroom. The little dog had gotten up and started exploring, bumping into everything in sight.
And why did she get the distinct scent of brimstone?
Huh.
Go figure.
“Hey there, buddy. How you doing?” The little dog whined and made his way tentatively toward her. She scooped him up and gave him a kiss on the forehead. “Well, hi there.” He gave her a look and nuzzled his head against her cheek, his little tail wagging.
“What do you think I should I name you?” She really had no idea. The dog nosed her again and gave a snort. “What do you think of Doodle?”
The dog made a little whining sound, and his eyes took on a distinct shade of red.
“Well, I don’t hear you making any suggestions.”
That explained a few things. Puppy in the street when Luc had told her to get her hair done. Only an idiot wouldn’t put two and two together. Her bestie had sent her a hellhound.
Mallory grinned. She should have known he wouldn’t forget to make sure she was protected.
Mallory reached over and shut the bathroom door. “You stay in here while I get cleaned up. Then we’ll feed you and talk about the rest, OK?”
The little dog cocked his head and wrinkled his forehead as if he were trying to figure out what she was saying.
“Here.” Mallory reached inside the bathroom closet and plucked out a large towel. She reached under the vanity and laid out the towel, bunching it up to be sort of like a dog bed.
Then it hit her. She hadn’t gotten him a bed.
“We’ll get you fixed up, sweetie. Don’t you worry about a thing.” But she knew getting a dog bed was probably going to be a futile endeavor. Terrence had slept with her every night, and part of her hoped the little guy would be similarly inclined. She’d never slept so well in her life as when she’d had his tiny warmth snuggled up next to her. Inviting the devil into your bed for night nights should have given her nightmares. As long as he was a cute little Chihuahua everything was fine. Luc was a gentleman.
Speaking of Luc. She went back to her purse and snagged her phone, shooting him a pic of the dog.
Your replacement. Traitor.
Let him sink his teeth into that for a bit. Mallory grinned and went back to her shower preparations.
“Why don’t you lay down here, honey?” She picked up the dog and deposited him in the towel bed. “Stay here.” She turned on the shower and jumped underneath the warm spray, letting the water take away the grime, grit, and mud from her day.
Mallory should have known it was too quiet. Strawberry shampoo and lavender soap reinvigorated her, and as she stepped out onto the mat, she felt her toes sink into something warm and squishy. Then the smell hit her.
“Ugh! Doodle!”
The dog raised its head from the towel and snuggled in deeper.
At least he was beginning to know his name.
“You…you…ugh!” Mallory put her foot back in the shower, wrenching on the water and removing the sprayer from the showerhead above it. Squirting the unholy mess off of her foot, she soaped it and sprayed it again. “That was nasty.”
Mallory emerged from the tub and cursed. She’d forgotten to grab a towel for herself from the bar across the room. Edging around the poop and dripping water everywhere, Mallory stepped onto the rug and carefully navigated her feet to avoid touching it again.
How could such a huge pile of crap come out of such a small dog? Mallory curled her lip in disgust, and she looked at the dog with horrified wonder.
She kicked the rug over and reached for a towel, trailing water across the floor.
“Great.”
Tucking the towel around her, she started to go for the soiled rug when the doorbell rang.

Excerpt:

Erica stopped in the doorway and turned to look back at her sleeping babies. The Goddesses truly did work in mysterious ways, she thought. She might not have had the pleasure of birthing the twins, but they were hers. She knew it with everything in her. They were hers!

“Come on, love,” Ben whispered in her ear as he urged her to lean back against him. “Leave them to dream of all the mischief and grief they will cause us over the next few decades. Now that they’re asleep, let’s make the most of this time we have alone.”

Heat swirled within her, and she nodded. They had been Mommy, Poppa, and Daddy all day. Now it was time for Mommy to get her some.

****

Leo had gone on ahead to the bedroom and lit all the candles they had, creating a golden glow that made Erica look radiant when she entered moments later with Ben. The smile on her face when she looked his way still made his heart skip a beat, just as it had the very first moment he’d seen her. He would swear that if he didn’t have a shifter’s strength, the sheer joy he’d felt since bringing the babies home and seeing Erica blossom as a mother would have made his heart explode.

He couldn’t have anticipated how two small little beings could instantly repair the gaping hole that had been ripped into their souls when the Goddess Allyria had told them the price they would pay for Alefric’s demise. But here they were, starting a new journey together, albeit, this one filled with much less danger, and much more need for an endless supply of wet wipes, but certainly just as important as anything Leo had ever done in his life previous. They would love and protect these children, and they would raise them to be the kind of people who made both sides of the Veil a better place.

“You look so resolved right now, Leo. What are you thinking about?” Erica stopped in front of him to gently caress his cheek with her hand.

“Just about how lucky we are … and how lucky you’re about to get.” He leaned in to kiss her as he landed a quick smack to her jean covered ass that made her yelp and laugh into his mouth.

“Now we’re talking,” Ben said. He quickly shucked off his own jeans and stepped up behind Erica to unbutton her top, revealing her soft, perfect breasts. He gently pulled back her wrists, using her top as a makeshift rope to bind them behind her. “How do you want it tonight, baby?”

Leo could tell from the quick increase in her breathing that she was in the mood for something a little edgier than “sweet” tonight.

“Mmm, I think I know exactly what our naughty little mate is looking for, don’t I, baby?” He cocked one eyebrow at her, and her eyes grew hooded as she bit down on her lower lip, indicating that she knew exactly the type of evening he had in mind. “Ben, get on the bed, sitting with your back against the headboard. You, my love, strip off those clothes for me, now.”

A TOUCH OF SPRING by Lisa Oliver

Alpha and Omega Book 4.5

BLURB

Lone alpha wolf, Bronson Cunningham, dreams of finding a mate and starts to think it’s possible when his best friend Asaph falls head over heels for Ronan; a sweet dancing omega. His curiosity is piqued when a strange letter lands on his desk, simply addressed “You smell like mine”. That must be a shifter reference, right? But it seems the guy likes to stay in the shadows, because Bronson doesn’t scent him anywhere.

Harley thinks he has every reason to hide. A savage scar on his face means his trysts are best kept to dark alleys. Watching his mate, he quickly realizes Bronson is one of the world’s beautiful people. He wasn’t going to be interested in a scarred tattooist from the wrong side of town.

A letter, a meeting, secrets are revealed. But is Bronson strong enough to stand by Harley’s side when he faces his nemesis from the past…and will Harley let him?

Note: This book is a spin-off from Harder in Heels (Alpha and Omega #4). It can be read as standalone, but you will know more about the secondary characters if you have read the other one first.

M/M, contains intimacy between two men, coarse language and off page reference to prior abuse.

EXCERPT

Bronson frowned at the pile of mail on his desk and thought longingly of Beatrice; his best friend Asaph’s PA. She wouldn’t leave a mess like this. She’d have it handled in no time flat and there’d be hot coffee waiting on my desk. But, even when faced with the secret that Asaph and he could turn furry when provoked, nothing would convince the sweet lady to leave Asaph’s employ.

That pile’s not going to disappear by itself, he grumbled as he sat at his desk and flicked through the pile of envelopes. Invitations, openings, a schedule of exhibitions one of his managers sent through. Bronson put that aside; he had a few changes he wanted to make. More invitations and a couple of bills he put in his jacket to give to his accountant later. Magazines, advertising. Gods, I don’t have time for this junk; Bronson threw them in the trashcan.

Hello. What’s this?

A plain white business-sized envelope was buried at the bottom of the pile. No postage, so it’d been hand delivered. It was slim, probably didn’t hold more than a single sheet of paper. But it was the salutation on the envelope that made Bronson pause. You Smell Like Mine.

“Damn Ronan’s having a joke with me; I’ll kick his ass, so help me,” Bronson muttered as he pulled out his phone. Tapping the screen, he tapped his foot impatiently as he waited for his friend to answer.

“Asaph, you bastard, has Ronan been in my office again?”

“Hello, to you too, Bronson,” Asaph said smoothly. “No, my errant mate hasn’t been in your office; he’s currently under my desk. Did you want to know what he was doing?”

“No, I don’t.” Bronson was pleased when Asaph finally pulled his head out of his ass and claimed his beautiful omega, but the damned man didn’t have to keep rubbing his nose in mated bliss. “And I don’t need the visual.”

“What’s got your nose in a snit?” Asaph asked, his breathing sounding a little harsher and definitely faster. “Make it quick. My mate has a wicked tongue.”

“It’s nothing; I’ll see you both for dinner at eight. Don’t be late.” Bronson disconnected the call and eyed the envelope as if it would bite.

You Smell Like Mine. It had to be a shifter reference; no human would address a letter that way. Bronson never wore cologne and even his bath gels were chosen for their muted scents. But there were no other shifters in Orlando – there was him and Asaph and well, now Ronan too, but they hadn’t known about him until recently. There’s another shifter in town?

“Just fucking open the letter, you damned dork,” he chided himself, picking up the envelope carefully. No bumps or lumps to indicate anything dangerous. Bronson sniffed the paper but couldn’t detect any chemical smells. There was a trace of something pleasant, but it was too elusive for Bronson to determine what it was.

Ripping the edge of the envelope, he pulled out a single sheet of paper. Whoever had written it was concise and had lovely handwriting. With technology, not many people took the time to correspond in cursive anymore. Bronson read the note, shook his head and then read it again.

Dear Mr. Cunningham,

What do you hope for when you think about meeting your mate? Someone petite and sexy like the woman I saw you with on Thursday? Or maybe you don’t mind men provided they’re short and submissive like the young blond I watched you disappear into the bathrooms with on Friday night? Perhaps you’re hoping for a ménage – that couple I saw you with on Saturday at the gallery opening certainly seemed to appreciate your advances and you all looked very cozy when you huddled in the taxi together.

I have to wonder why you haven’t noticed me. Could it be your nose doesn’t work or are you so busy having a good time, you’re not ready for a mate? Or maybe, and this option shatters my heart but has to be mentioned, maybe you have noticed me and find me lacking. You wouldn’t be the first one to think that way but you could have at least told me so to my face.

I’ll keep watching; now I have scented you, I find it impossible to stay away. Maybe through watching, I’ll find the answer.

Have a nice evening, Mr. Cunningham.

Yours.

A flood of emotions swamped Bronson’s body and instinctively he reached for his phone, before pulling his hand out of his jacket. Asaph would still be busy with Ronan and Bronson wasn’t sure he was ready to share the news just yet. “I have a mate,” he tested the words on his tongue. It felt good. “I have a mate!” Louder this time. Bronson’s heart soared and he looked around as though this magical stranger would suddenly appear.

But of course, he was alone. All he had was the note. A note that made it quite plain his mate knew who he was and felt…what exactly? Bronson considered the carefully penned words. Disrespected? Unworthy? Beneath his notice? A strong growl rumbled in his chest. No mate should ever feel that way and Bronson felt a flush of guilt at the thought of what his mate had seen.

Yes, he did take someone home damn near every night. As an alpha wolf, he had a strong sex drive. But for Bronson, sex did more than scratch an itch. The truth of the matter was, since Asaph mated Ronan, holding someone close, even if it was only for long enough to get his rocks off, banished the loneliness he felt as a lone wolf.

Checking his office door was firmly closed; Bronson called on his wolf and brought the paper up to his nose. Ink. Fibers. Chemicals probably used in the paper making process. A light tinge of exhaust fumes as the letter had been written outside. There. He leaned on the paper to hold it steady. Bronson groaned as he rubbed the patch of paper against his nose, causing the rest of the note to flutter against his mouth. Apricots and lemongrass with the slightest tinge of wolf. Hang on a minute, that’s not a wolf. Bronson pulled the paper away from his face and stared at it, astonished.

That’s a cat shifter I smell. A big cat. How the hell did I miss someone like that?

Adult Excerpt

Bronson couldn’t hold out. He’d done his best; given it the old college try, but Harley’s mouth was made for his cock and the man used it with expert precision. He could feel his orgasm building; the tightness in his balls, that tingle down the base of his spine, the way his ass clenched. A flush covered his face and chest and he longed for something to hold onto. He wanted to cradle Harley’s head, but unsure of his mate’s background he didn’t dare. Harley solved that problem for him by grabbing his hand and pressing it to the back of his skull.

His other hand joined the first instinctively and Bronson groaned at the sensual sight at his feet. Harley’s eyes were closed as though savoring the experience, his lips reddened as they stretched around his shaft. A surge of possessiveness soared through Bronson’s body and he pounded, once, twice and then with a roar he came, his head tilted back as he swayed on his feet. Bronson’s head flopped forward, his chin hitting the top of his chest.

“Are you okay,” he managed between gasps, suddenly aware his hands were gripping Harley’s head. He loosened his fingers but was reluctant to break his hold entirely.

“Uh huh,” Harley said, pulling off Bronson’s cock with a pop. He grinned, the scar pulling not distracting from the joy in Harley’s eyes. “Let’s get you on the bed; you seem a bit wobbly on your feet.”

Wobbly? My brains have been sucked out through my dick. Bronson stumbled over to the bed and sat on the edge, his chest still heaving. He pushed his jeans completely off and removed his shoes. “Are you…can you…are you going to get undressed?” Harley’s bulge was obvious, but his mate still seemed hesitant, almost reluctant to move near him. Bronson still wanted the claiming; wanted it more than ever now, but he wasn’t sure he could cobble two brain cells together long enough to pull off one of his seductive moves. He settled for a grin instead.

“I hope you like ink,” Harley said, kicking off his boots and pulling his shirt over his head. Bronson’s eyes widened, swirls of black, red and gold covered Harley’s torso.

“Stop,” he said as Harley went to unbutton his jeans. Harley looked up, a frown creasing his forehead. “You are a living work of art,” Bronson said reverently. “Please,” he held out his hand. “Come closer. I want to see.”

Again…that hesitation, but after a moment, Harley sauntered closer, his stance almost defiant as though expecting Bronson to attack him. Bronson cupped his hand around Harley’s butt as soon as the man was in grabbing range, the other hand tracing the symbols, swirls, and designs that covered Harley’s chest. “This is beautiful, is it all your own work?”

“I did most of it,” Harley said, his eyes watching Bronson’s fingers. “The ones on my back were done by the guy I trained under. I drew the designs and he put them on my skin.” Harley turned and Bronson leaned back to take in the full effect. While the torso designs seemed random, Harley’s back was covered with a nature scene. Tall trees, lush brush, birds flying across a cloudy sky. In the center of the design was a small, ramshackle cottage, its foreboding structure at odds with the beauty of its surroundings.

“This is where you came from, am I right?” Bronson asked quietly as he gently traced the dilapidated wood structure.

“It’s what I turned my back on,” Harley turned again, his eyes blazing. “I want you, please don’t think I don’t, but surely now you can see we come from two different worlds.”

Bronson pulled Harley close enough he could bury his face in his mate’s lean stomach. “You walked away from a hard life and forged one of your own. That took so much courage; courage and strength I respect. Surely you can spare some of that courage for our new life; join with me so we can create a life that works for both of us?”

“Oh, you are a smooth one, aren’t you, fancy pants?” Bronson felt Harley stroke his hair and he grinned against the smooth stomach. “It’s not going to be easy, you know that don’t you.”

Actually, Bronson thought nothing of the sort, but he nodded, loving the way his cheek rubbed against the silkiness of Harley’s skin.

“We live totally different lives and if you expect me to turn up at a gallery opening in a suit and drink wine, you’re sorely mistaken.”

Bronson turned his face and rubbed the other cheek against Harley’s stomach, nodding all the while.

“I’m serious,” Harley said firmly and Bronson’s head was cupped in slender hands, emeralds glaring at him.

“I know. I’ll ask Grizz for some of his home brew and have it stocked especially for you.” Bronson couldn’t nod this time so he waggled his eyebrows.

Harley laughed. “Fine, but don’t blame me if you change your mind the first time I turn up at your fancy place of work on my bike.”

“I’ll be sitting on the bitch seat honey, now kiss me.”

There was a lot less hesitation this time. Harley’s lips were warm and firm, and while the intensity was still there, Harley kept things slow and sensual. Bronson was hooked. When Harley pushed him back on the bed, he went willingly, pulling Harley with him.

“Let me get my pants off first,” Harley grumbled and Bronson let him go, his smile wide enough to light the house as he waited for his mate, his true mate, to claim him.

/~/~/~/~/

I told him, I’ve given him every excuse to back out, but no, the shaggy pup just lays there looking all tempting and sexy and what’s a cat to do? Harley kept his worried thoughts off his face as he dropped his pants and hunted in his bedside drawer for lube. He wasn’t going to show his nerves either, although if Bronson was thinking with anything but his dick, he’d smell it. But no, the big Alpha owned the bed as if born to it, apparently totally unconcerned about being penetrated. Harley pressed his lips together as he climbed on the bed, lube in hand. He had very little experience with this side of things and with his cat pushing him hard, he wondered if it would be easier to just let Bronson fuck him.

Or not, as his cat growled menacingly in his head. His cat had a wicked temper but it took a lot to rile him. Dangling a claiming like a mouse on a string and threatening to take it away was enough to make his presence known.

“You have a beautiful body,” Bronson purred, “one of these days I am going to lick every one of those tattoos.”

“Even the one on my dick?” Harley chuckled, his nerves easing slightly. He was so much smaller than his mate; yet, despite his alpha nature, Bronson didn’t get pushy, demanding or anything else. He just lay on the sheets, a languid smile on his face, his fist gently manipulating his cock which was still hard.

“I will definitely pay attention to that one later,” Bronson replied. “However, for now, I assume you want me to turn over?”

“Whichever you prefer.” Harley had only ever fucked a guy from behind. Watching porn told him face to face was possible. He supposed he could muddle through. So long as he didn’t hurt Bronson, things should be fine.

“What I want,” Bronson said, sitting up and holding out his hand, “is for you to hand me that lube. I want you to lie back on this bed and watch as I prepare myself for you. Then I’m going to sit on that highly decorated cock and fuck myself with it until your teeth drop and you can’t think of anything else but biting me.”

Yep, that would work too. Harley swallowed hard but did as Bronson suggested. Stuff the art gallery business; if Bronson ever went broke he’d make a fortune as a porn star. Turning and flashing that rounded ass; Harley almost swallowed his tongue as he watched Bronson’s long fingers teasing his tiny hole, slathering it with lube before dipping inside. All the while, Bronson moaned and wiggled and through his parted legs Harley could see his cock bobbing above his heavy balls. He gripped the base of his cock sharply, staving off his inevitable climax. Harley was sure he’d never seen anything as erotic or so damned sensual his entire life and he’d seen a lot.

“Like what you see,” Bronson grinned as Harley nodded mutely. “Then you’re going to love this.” Swinging his legs around, suddenly Harley found himself with a lapful of mate. “You hold it up,” Bronson tilted Harley’s cock, which Harley still had a stranglehold on, “and I’ll slip down.”

Open. Closed. Open. Closed. Harley’s eyelids were doing the tango. He wanted to watch his powerful mate, muscles rippling and the sheer ecstasy on Bronson’s face as he lowered himself down. But the pressure on his dick; the heat and the way it just made itself at home as though his only purpose was to fit in Bronson’s body, had Harley closing his eyes again. It was too little; it was too much and Harley found himself open-mouthed panting as Bronson settled himself.

“Open your eyes kitty cat; you’re not going to want to miss this.”

Harley opened his eyes to find Bronson’s face right in front of his. “You were made for me, you know that, right?”

He managed a nod. Now was not the time to be bringing up his worries about their mating. Not with Bronson’s body holding his cock hostage.

“You’ll trust in time,” Bronson smiled. “Now kiss me like you mean it and let’s get this show on the road.”

Looping his arms around Bronson’s neck, Harley’s hands buried themselves in Bronson’s hair as the man began to move. Never one for multitasking, he concentrated on the taste of Bronson’s lips, the way the man’s breath quickened with his movements. His hips began to rise and fall automatically and Harley felt his cat surge within him. Bracing his feet on the mattress he began to thrust harder and Bronson tore his lips away so he could breathe.

I’m doing that. I’m bringing my mate pleasure. Harley’s confidence soared. His emotions entwining with those of his animal spirit, Harley felt the rush of possessiveness, the need to mark and claim; before he knew what he was doing he had Bronson flat on his back, his hips working overtime as he pounded into his mate’s body. Mine! Fucking all mine! His teeth dropped, catching his lip, but Harley welcomed the pain. He knew he must look like some feral animal, but Bronson’s eyes were just as heated, the flash of wolf hardening his face.

“Do it,” Bronson grunted and Harley saw Bronson’s fangs were showing. “Do it now.”

Fates, don’t let this be a mistake, was Harley’s last conscious thought as he sank his fangs into Bronson’s shoulder and felt a reciprocal nip on his neck. He couldn’t move. His cock was buried as deep as it could go, his orgasm working without him, filling his mate with his seed. His eyes tightly closed, Harley could feel it all; the swirl of his mighty cat meeting his mate’s wolf, their sniffing and joining, followed by a joy that threatened to burst his heart and send every cell he had into the stratosphere.

It’s done, Harley thought as he swallowed a mouthful of Bronson’s blood and then gently removed his fangs and licked the wound to help it heal. Tears prickled his eyes and he buried his face in Bronson’s neck to hide them. Please let me be a good mate, he begged to the heavens as he was seized with a fit of trembling and slumped into Bronson’s arms. Without his mate grounding him, he swore he’d fall apart.

Excerpt

Evan had never seen Nicca look frightened before. Those silver eyes expanded into saucers, and they were still beautiful. He wanted to wrap her in his arms, just hold her close as they both tried to process a world spinning out of control. Even his rat wanted to comfort her.
She was getting under skin and fur.
The last leaves hung limp on the branches, resisting winter’s pull. Away from the sidhe, the air had warmed, although the sky retained a grayish winter hue. Shifter bodies held heat, keeping them comfortable in the most brutal frost. Evan burned hot from continuous movement, the too frequent adrenaline spikes, and Nicca’s nearness. Everything about her fit, like she was made for him. That agile mind, open-mindedness, those lush curves. Hell, she even spouted poetry. He yearned to put a sign around her neck—no trespassing, this woman belongs to Evan Grant.
Except for that whole wolf thing…
“Why don’t we find a comfortable place to set up camp near Fairy Falls and call it a day?” he said to get his mind back to practical things, not wishing for something he couldn’t have. He told himself he selected the location as part of the mission. All species declared the pristine, wild falls a safe zone, so they wouldn’t need the wolves or eagles to stand guard. The fact that it was the number one rated site for shifter romances had nothing to do with the selection. Nothing at all.
No one would ever accuse Nicca of talking too much, but she was withdrawn even for her on the hike to the Falls. “Any suggestions on places to sleep?” he asked when her silence got too loud for him.
“I’ve, uh, never really been here,” she whispered, looking at the ground. “Just run by it on patrols sometimes.”
“And that makes you sad?” He itched to run his hand down her cheek.
“This mission makes me sad.” Her gaze stayed lowered as she walked.
His rat senses perceived a deep despondency wrapped around her like a black aura.
“This mission makes you angry, anxious, and confused. Not sad.”
“Who are you to correct my assessment of my emotional state?” She gave him a half-hearted snarl. He figured he’d hit an open, raw nerve.
“I lead this mission, and I will not have you fall apart on me. Right now, you are not okay.” He opened his arm, aping Rafe’s earlier action, inviting her to him to take comfort. “Let me help.” Let me touch you.
She visibly shook herself, ignoring his outstretched limb. “You’re right. I need space. Let me run as wolf.”
He dropped his hand, then nodded to cover the ripping sound his heart was making. “Stay close,” he said over the lump of disappointment lodged in his throat. “Give me your backpack, and I’ll find a place to sleep. Meet me at the falls when you’re done.”
Relief brightened her eyes. Once shifted, she brushed against his leg, then licked at his hand dangling by his side. He ran his fingers through her thick, gray fur touched with black and silver as she trotted off. “Grab some happy, Nicca,” he said into the air, as she raced out of sight. Come back to me. Accept me.
Alone, he hummed as he walked toward the falls. The low tune soothed his skittish rat, who hated being alone and wasn’t too fond of the woods. Rats felt secure in the pack. The human in him appreciated the red gold of the sunset streaking across the powder blue of the sky, weaving in and out of spiky, hunter green firs that ate up the landscape. Beauty truly did soothe an aching heart. The whirr of winter birds, a chorus to his ears, unnerved the rat. He picked up his pace, following the smell of ice and the roar of the falling water.
When he arrived at the falls, he saw Nicca standing at the edge of the descending water, running her fingers through the stream. That sadness he’d sensed earlier scented the air and dulled those unique gray eyes. Following a powerful intuition, he approached quietly, staying upwind so she wouldn’t notice until he stood directly behind her. She may have rejected his offer of support earlier, but he was determined to try again. His way.
She turned to face him, and tilted her head up to meet his gaze. He pushed behind one ear a lock of hair that was draped along her cheek. The tresses felt like silk, the skin velvet against his fingertips.
“Evan?”
He leaned over, touching lips to lips ever so gently. Giving comfort. Sneaking a taste. Exploring what might be. She pressed back, her mouth opening slightly beneath his. He sank into cherry and cinnamon, shyness and heat. She didn’t require a friend; she needed a lover. He desperately wanted to be that man.
He pulled back, falling hard for the blush staining her cheeks a bright pink.
“Follow me,” he said, taking her hand, and led her to the camping spot he noticed along the way.
To love a wolf.

About Shari Elder

Hello, I’m Shari. By day, I crawl out of bed, mainline coffee, walk the dog, get my kid off to school, hop on the metro, and save cities within the four walls of my office. Usually by email.

At night, the other Shari emerges. I take off the suit, curl up on the couch and let my imagination play, with words and images until stories take shape (while periodically checking on my teen-ager, hiding out in the bedroom and plotting world domination). As my alter ego, I save cities in a cape and spangled tights, wander space and time on a surfboard, fly over the Himalayas on feathered wings, make six-toed footprints in indigo talc snow on the sixth planet in the Andromeda galaxy or eavesdrop on Olympian gods while pretending to whip up a bowl of ambrosia.

In all these wondrous worlds, romance and passion blossom. I can’t resist a happy ending. And I am particularly prone to writing happy endings for those who have given up on ever getting one. That gives me immense satisfaction.

Join me on my journey. The best ideas emerge from team work.
