A FAR CRY FROM HOME by Peri Elizabeth Scott @evernightpub

Blurb:

Regan Ferguson knows little past running The Inn, her home
since her adoption. Again orphaned, she’s dealt another blow. Her father never
repaid a loan, the recipient being Maddox Ferguson, her newfound, sexy cousin.

Intrigued by the woman he never knew existed, Maddox is awed
by her tenacity and determination to continue with The Inn. He makes her a loan
to give her the opportunity to learn for herself how impossible the task,
rather than personally destroying any chance to explore the connection between
them. However, he quietly lines up potential buyers as a fallback plan.

Regan eventually has that epiphany, only to accidentally
determine Maddox’s plan. Feeling betrayed and confused, she secretly signs the
buyout and hits the road with her cat, Oscar.

Maddox follows, and without The Inn between them they find
their happily ever after—Regan learns that home is wherever her heart is.

Excerpt:

She stuck out her hand, and he fancied she saw it as an olive branch. The hostility she’d initially projected was gone, and he took the opportunity to encroach into her space. Clasping her small, work-roughened hand in his much larger one, a frisson of energy sparked between them and he felt her quiver.

Fascinated, he watched as she strove to regain her composure, while he allowed his desire to show. Staring into her eyes, the pale-blue of her irises consumed by the dilation of her pupils, he read her need. He tugged her to his chest, the clean smell of soap and water, and something uniquely Regan, wafting from her.

Her head tipped back and he dropped his mouth down on hers, the immediate connection hardening his flesh to the point of pain. She relaxed into his hold and he tasted her with desperate intent. His fingers wove through the silky mass of her hair, holding her steady, and she moaned deep in her throat. She pressed closer, her arms wreathing around his neck.

He somehow brought it to a close, over long before he wanted it to be, but his conscience pricked hard. He’d promised her the time and money to bring The Inn up to snuff, somehow unable to resist. And now he’d honor his commitment, intuiting the importance of this woman determining her own destiny. Not a fling, not like with his other women.

His libido jeered and prodded at him but knew to allow nature to take its course. Wherever this connection with Regan was going, he wouldn’t hurry nor derail it.

As they both caught their breath, he gently set her away from him, his hands on her lithe waist, until she steadied on her stool. “I normally don’t seal business deals with a kiss,” he said, aware his tone held a certain rasp. Clearing his throat, he continued, “It’s been a … momentous day.”

Her slender throat working in a swallow, she said, “I’ve never sealed a business deal before.”

He knew she wasn’t experienced and doubted she kissed every man she’d just met with fervor and without meaning anything by it. Aching for her, he clamped down on his physical need and did his best to appear suave and unruffled. “We have a deal, Regan. I’ll bring my things in and get settled while you get organized. You’ll need a material list, among other things.”

Visibly drawing her composure around her like flexible armor, she slipped from the stool and turned her back on him, clearing away the dishes on the island. “Sounds good. I’ll just tidy up and then sit down with pen and paper. Lists are good.”

Holding hard on to his own equanimity, he nodded and headed out for his car. Some fresh air would clear his head and cool him down.

Cover Artist: Bryan Keller

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Silver Fox (older hero)

Blurb:

Mara: I was daddy’s little girl, until he didn’t come home one day. Mom moved on, married a rich guy I can’t stand, and his son, Sebastian Rossi, wants what he can’t have — me. I didn’t realize when I chose to run that I would crash down a mountain, or that the man who pulled me from the wreckage would rescue me in every way that counts. Rocky is the biggest, sexiest badass I’ve ever seen. And the more time I spend with him, the more I want to feel his lips on mine, his hands holding me, his body claiming me. I want him so bad I can taste it, but the stubborn man says I’m too young. I’ll just have to prove him wrong.

Rocky: All I wanted was to brood in peace and quiet on my mountaintop while I tried to outrun my demons. I never expected that past to show up in the form of a sexy as fuck woman — a woman I shouldn’t touch. I’m not only twenty years older than her, I’m part of the reason her dad never came home. I’ll do anything it takes to keep her safe, even go home to Alabama. My brothers, the Dixie Reapers, will help protect her. I’m just not sure who’s going to protect her from me, because if I ever get my hands on all those curves, I’m not ever going to let her go.

EXCERPT:

“Coffee,” he said, although it came out more like a grunt.

I accepted the cup, the warmth of it seeping into my chilled fingers, and took a sip. Despite the bitter taste, I didn’t wince. I’d always been more of a caramel skinny latte kind of girl, but the hot coffee slid down my throat and began to warm me from the inside out. Rocky watched me a few minutes before walking off again, his boots thudding against the wood floors.

When the coffee was gone, I set the cup aside and tried to push myself to my feet. I groaned, and the room spun as I staggered upright. As everything began to tilt and I felt myself falling back to the floor, strong arms wrapped around me, drawing my body tight against my rescuer. Rocky’s hands splayed across my back, and I couldn’t remember ever feeling so delicate. I was small in stature at just a hair over five feet, but I had more curves than most. Men had called me chunky most of my life. But with Rocky, I felt… feminine. Womanly. I felt…

The warmth that began to spread through me made me gasp and jerk my gaze to his face. Something hard and thick pressed against my belly. I might not be experienced, but even I couldn’t deny that Rocky seemed attracted to me. Or maybe he hadn’t had a woman in so long that just anyone would do. I saw his eyes flare a moment before he lifted me into his arms and began striding for the stairs.

I clung to him, not knowing where we were going, but suspecting it was his bedroom. I should tell him to return me to the fire, tell him I didn’t want this.

But you do, a voice whispered in my ear.

And I did. I’ve never found a man attractive before, not like this. But with Rocky’s arms holding me, I wanted to know what it would feel like to be pressed against him, skin to skin. I wanted to feel him slide inside me, claim me, and make me his. I wanted to feel that beard rub against my skin. I wanted… him. I briefly wondered what kind of woman that made me since I’d crashed down a damn mountain and now wanted to have sex with my hunky rescuer. Maybe I’d suffered head trauma.

The stairs ended at a large room with no door. The bed against the wall looked far bigger than a regular king-size, the covers rumpled. Rocky carried me across the room and eased me down onto the soft mattress, then pulled the covers up to my chin. He paused a moment before turning to the fireplace across the room. Wood was stacked nearby, and he began building a fire. Watching his muscular back and shoulders move was starting another kind of fire too. One I had never felt before. I pressed my thighs together to ease the ache.

When the blaze was glowing brightly, Rocky rose to his feet and studied me. There was heat in his gaze, and I wondered if I was finally going to find out what it was like to have a man claim me. I’d held onto my virginity for so long, never had been tempted to lose it. Until now.

“Dinner will be ready in an hour. You should rest,” he said gruffly before turning and leaving me alone.

My jaw dropped at his retreating back, and when I heard the last of his steps carrying him down the stairs, I slumped against his pillows and drew in a deep breath. My eyes closed as his scent surrounded me. Something woodsy and full of spice. Curling onto my side, I buried my face in his pillow and just breathed him in. Whoever the strange man was who had pulled me from the car, it was obvious he wasn’t going to take advantage. And for some reason, that disappointed me.

“Stupid woman,” I muttered. I felt the tingle between my legs and moaned. “And stupid hormones.”

“You control everything,” she blurted. Her cheeks reddened, and she bowed her head. “Sorry. But you do.”

“Actually, you do. When we play, you’re the one in control. You say stop or slow, and I follow. I push you, but you tell me when you’re done. I’ll encourage you to stretch your boundaries, but only because I want to make you fly.” He pushed the cooling coffee to the side. “If you say no, then I respect your decision.”

“You expect me to kneel.” She flattened her palms on the table. “Like that last time.”

“I wanted to show off my beautiful woman. If you’d have said no before we left the private area, I would’ve stayed out of the main room.” He leveled his gaze at her. “I expect a partner. You were my best partner.” He hadn’t taught her very well if she thought she was second rate. When they played again—and they would be—he’d show her what he meant.

“You have one. A partner. I saw the demonstration,” she said. “You replaced me.”

“Slow down.” He hadn’t known she was at the club when he’d done the demonstration or he would’ve plucked her from the audience. “Which demo?”

“There’s more than one?”

“I don’t have a permanent sub, so I’m expected to do demonstrations for visitors, for the videos … for people who want to play the voyeur. That’s part of my job at the club.” Not his favorite part and he couldn’t wait to pass the torch to someone else, but he’d tell her that later. She managed to aggravate him like no other. He wanted to stretch her ass across his lap and spank the sass out of her. Then he wanted to kiss her until she collapsed. He wasn’t one to settle down, but she made him think twice. In her own way, she’d broken him.

“I thought we had something.” She turned her cup around. “Now I understand I was just another client.”

“I never said that. Never thought it,” he said. She’d been special from the start. He loved the way she felt in his arms, the way she moaned during a scene, the flicker in her eyes just before she came…

“Then why replace me? Why not tell me how you felt?” she asked. “Or have you come to this realization now that we’re not at the club?”

“First, I didn’t replace you. I don’t have any one sub I play with. The girls in the video are one and done. No sex, just demonstration and go. I haven’t found anyone who can fill your place. I’ve had a couple offers, but they aren’t you.” They shouldn’t be having this conversation in public, but she needed reassurance. “Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?”

Recipe Intro:

Let me start off by saying I am not a great cook, baker, or candlestick maker, 😉 so the dessert recipe I am sharing with you was actually prepared by my fourteen year old niece for one of our big family dinners. This girl can definitely bake because these mini cheesecakes were absolutely delish.

Recipe:

Vanilla mini cheesecakes

Ingredients
1 cup crushed graham crackers
3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp sugar, divided
4 Tbsp melted butter
3 8 oz. packages cream cheese, softened
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
3 eggs, room temperature
1 cup whipping cream (or heavy cream)
1 cup raspberries
1/4 cup confectioners sugar

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F
2. Combine graham cracker crumbs, 2 Tbsp sugar, and 4 Tbsp melted butter. Press onto bottoms of 18 paper- lined muffin cups. Refrigerate until needed.
3. Beat cream cheese, vanilla and remaining sugar with mixer until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition just until blended. Do not over blend
4. Spoon batter into crusts.
5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until centers are almost set. Cool completely. Refrigerate 2 hours.
6. Beat whipping cream with mixer in medium speed until stiff peaks form. Do not over beat. Add confectioners sugar and mix together with standard whisk.
7. Spread whipping cream onto cheesecakes. Top with raspberries.
8. Enjoy!

Recipe Intro:

I am no kind of cook. If I can take something out of the fridge or freezer and put it in the oven or into a saucepan, I’m all good. Otherwise, I’m not interested, LOL. Having said that, though, I can be tempted to “make” some things…

Recipe:

Oreo “bark” (nothing to do with your dog):

Ingredients:

Oreos

Large bar of white chocolate

Method:

Crush the Oreos into small pieces

Melt the white chocolate, then stir in the Oreo pieces

Put the mixture in a flat baking tray of some kind and spread it out so you have a huge flat slab of chocolate/Oreo mix

Allow to cool in the fridge

Eat

This can, of course, be switched up easily to include your favourite types of chocolate and favourite “fillings”, but the combination of the flavours here is amazing.

Recipe Intro

THE LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOON LAMINGTON

Now, the lamington is a kiwi icon.  An afternoon tea delight that reminds me of lazy Sunday afternoons spent with my family, making these for school lunches, but taste testing a few for quality assurance purposes only — honest!  My Aussie authors in this fabulous boxset might contest and argue that the humble lamington is theirs but trust me… this is all Kiwi!

Recipe:

INGREDIENTS

Sponge Cake

½ cup self-raising flour

½ cup plain flour

½ cup wheaten cornflour

6 extra large eggs, at room temperature

1 cup raw caster sugar or just plain caster sugar

1 Tbsp boiling water

15g butter

4 cups shredded coconut (for rolling pieces in)

Icing:

100g dark chocolate

¾ cup water

2 cups icing sugar, sifted

1 cup cocoa, sifted

½ cup milk

METHOD:

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C conventional or 170°C fan forced. Grease a 30cm x 29cm lamington tin. Line the base and sides with non-stick baking paper, allowing it to overhang slightly.
  2. Sponge cake Sift the combined flours three times into a bowl. Using an electric beater whisk eggs in a large clean, dry bowl until thick and pale. Gradually add raw caster sugar or caster sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition until mixture is thick and sugar dissolves.
  3. Sift the combined flours over the egg mixture. Combine butter and boiling water and pour down the side of the bowl. Use a spatula to gently fold in until just combined.

Pour mixture into the prepared tin. Bake for 20 -25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn cake onto a wire rack to cool. Place in an airtight container. Cake is best made the day before cutting.

  1. To make lamingtons Cut sponge cake into 18 pieces. Put coconut into a wide bowl. Make icing by combining chocolate and water in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Stir until chocolate has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
  2. Sift icing sugar and cocoa over chocolate mixture, stir until smooth. Add milk and mix until well combined. Work quickly as chocolate sauce will thicken on cooling.
  3. Using a large fork, dip sponge cake pieces into chocolate mixture, drain slightly then roll in coconut. Leave to set on a tray.

Homebuilder Winston never bargained on reality TV lust turning to love off-screen, but can he and Trina build a future on a foundation of lies?

Dirty Demo Blurb:

When Winston Hartwell’s construction crew ends up on a reality TV show, there’s no way he’s going to sing for his supper, no matter how nicely the curvy camera lady asks. He’s terrified of the limelight, and he doesn’t trust these Hollywood types as far as he can throw them.

Trina McCallister is one last reality show away from her dream job of filming movies. She’ll do whatever it takes to get the footage she needs and get the hell out. But she isn’t prepared for the sexy giant with a voice of gold to demolish her carefully constructed defenses.

When lies and fear shake their newly laid foundation, only an act of bravery and trust will save them from ruin.

Recipe Intro:

My mother always told me the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. My husband would not disagree. So when I started writing my first romance novel, Someone Special, my heroine made an epic first impression with a plate of to-die-for chocolate chip cookies. My readers were up in arms demanding cookies to satisfy their urgent cravings. How could I refuse? I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as they have.

Recipe:

Dani’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
3 cups of flour
1 t baking soda
½ t salt
1 c butter, softened
½ c granulated white sugar
1 c brown sugar, tightly packed
2 t vanilla
2 eggs
1 c semisweet chocolate chips
1 c dark chocolate chips
½ c walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla until pale yellow and fluffy, either with a mixer or a wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together and add to the wet mixture. Mix until well combined. Add chocolates at the end and mix again. Drop heaping teaspoons of dough two inches apart on greased cookie sheets. For larger cookies, use a measured 1/3 cup and flatten a little before baking. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. If you want them soft, remove them when lightly browned. Let them go a little longer for a crisper finish. Leave them to set on the baking sheet for 1 minute before moving to a cooling rack. Makes 6-7 dozen, depending on size.

Down & Dirty in the kitchen with CR Moss #DownandDirty #D&D @CRMoss @romancerebels69

Today we have fellow Down & Dirty author CR Moss with us to share one of her favorite recipes, along with her story in the anthology, Keep You Safe!

A stalked artist. A sexy wrangler. She’d watched over him once upon a time. Now it’s his turn to keep her safe.

Keep Her Safe Blurb:

I’m Professor Arianna Perez, and I’ve been asked if I’ll ever trust, let alone love, another man again. After dumping an abusive boyfriend, I doubted I would. At least, that’s how I felt until fate had sexy wrangler, Kian Bishop, reappearing in my life in a way I never expected.

Against my better judgement, I fell hard for the cowboy, believing everything he said, including how he wanted to treat me like a queen and keep me safe. Little did I know, though, that the circumstances that’d brought us together could also tear us apart…and possibly claim my life.

Recipe Intro:

I have a thing for potatoes. I have thing for soups, too. Put them together and… Yum! So one day when I was craving some Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana, I started searching the web for a copy cat recipe. I came across this link: https://happyhooligans.ca/zuppa-toscana-olive-garden-knock-recipe/ The recipe looked easy enough, and the author’s claims seemed interesting. I figured I’d give it a go. And, OMG! So good! There was one day that I bought enough items to make a super huge batch, and I ended up having to grab one of my husband’s beer brewing pots to be able to fit the soup in to cook it. Luckily, the five-gallon pot fit on the stove! After we gorged ourselves on the soup, we froze the rest. It’s a nice surprise to find containers of soup out in the garage freezer when you’ve forgotten you have them. LOL! Below is the original recipe from the link I provided above. After the recipe I’ve shared my tweaks to it. Enjoy!

Recipe:

Zuppa Toscana

Ingredients:

1 lb spicy ground sausage (I often just chop up 3 jumbo sausages.  I like the “medium-spicy” ones, but use mild if you’re opposed to heat)

    1 large white onion, diced

    4 slices fried, chopped bacon

    3 cloves garlic, crushed

    9 cups water

    1 cup heavy cream

5 cubes of chicken bouillon (or as much liquid bouillon as you’d need for 9 cups of liquid water)

3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed

    2 cups fresh kale, chopped

To make your soup:

Sauté your sausage in a large pot until it’s cooked through.  Drain the grease, and remove the sausage, and pop it into the refrigerator.  You won’t be needing it for a while.

Leave a little bit of grease in the pot (maybe a tbsp or so).

Now you’re going to fry your bacon in this pot.  You want to use the pot that you just cooked your sausage in because it has all that flavourful sausage goodness in there.

Sauté your bacon until it’s half-way cooked, and then add your onions and garlic, and continue to cook over LOW heat until the bacon is fully cooked and the onions and garlic are soft.

Add a bit of your water to deglaze your pot, and then add the rest of the water and the bouillon, and bring it all to a boil.

Toss in your cubed potatoes, and cook over medium heat until the potatoes are cooked.  This generally takes about a half-hour.

Stir in the cream.

Add your sausage and chopped kale, and heat through.

Serve your amazing Zuppa Toscana with a crusty loaf or my easy bread-machine dinner rolls.

My tweaks that help to save a bit of time…

I use a package of ground hot sausage (example: Johnsonville All Natural Fresh Italian Hot Ground Sausage) and cook it as one would do ground beef. Then I drain all the grease and put the meat aside. The onion is sweet. Bacon… Well, I like bacon, so I usually go overboard with it. I tend to buy the pre-cooked kind that you can microwave in a few seconds (example: HORMEL® BLACK LABEL® Fully Cooked Bacon). This I’ll cut up and throw in the pan, let it cook a bit and then add in the onion. As for the water & chicken bouillon, if salt/sodium is an issue, I found that doing about 4.5 cups of water and 4.5 cups of chicken broth works just as well. These amounts you can play around with as you make batches to see what fits your tastes. Potatoes – I’ve used regular baking potatoes, and I’ve used red potatoes with their skins left on (peeling red potatoes is not fun, IMO). Again, depending upon your tastes you can use what you want. Granted, if you go with red, since they’re usually smaller, I suggest cutting up about six to seven. The kale I use is pre-chopped, bagged organic. After I’ve done most of the prep work and got the soup going, I’ll work on plucking the hard, thick stems from the leaves and just use the leafy bits in the soup.

Down & Dirty in the kitchen with Sarah Marsh #DownandDirty #D&D @romancerebels69

Hi there everyone! My newest anthology project is the Down & Dirty collection, which features 22 original stories all about blue collar heroes and the ladies who appreciate a man who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. 😉

My story, Sweet Addiction is about a pastry chef who wins over sexy rancher. I have more than a couple scenes that revolve around the delicious creations she makes, so I thought it would be a fun way to promote this set by having some of my fellow Down & Dirty authors share their favorite recipes with you!

Sasha has what Declan needs to take care of his sweet tooth, and any other hungers …if she can only find the courage to show it.

Sweet Addictions Blurb:

The opportunity to build her own future and start over is exactly what Sasha needs. Moving to the small town of Digby to open up a pastry shop is more than enough to make her happy, or so she thought. What she wasn’t counting on was the sexy rancher that seems to have quite an interest in her, for far more than her baking skills.

Sasha has exactly what Declan needs to take care of his sweet tooth, and any other hungers that may arise…if she has the courage to show it. He’s figured out that Sasha is gun shy when it comes to men, but with some patience, he hopes to sneak past her walls and show her that he’s in it for more than just dessert. When his past comes calling, will Sasha open up and trust him, or will she shut her heart down for good?

Recipe Intro:

I actually used to be a pastry chef and one of my most favorite things to make because its so incredibly versatile is choux paste. For those of who are wondering what the heck choux paste is… this is the dough that cream puffs and eclairs are made of. You can also use it to make so many other things, from desserts to appetisers, it really is one of the building blocks to French pastries.

Recipe:

Choux Paste (Pate a choux)

Yield: 3 cups of raw dough

2 cups fresh eggs (approx 9 large eggs, lightly mixed with a fork)

1 cup water

1 cup milk

1.5 tsp salt

2 tsp sugar (or more if you like)

½ lb butter

2 cups flour

Bring water, milk, butter, sugar and salt to a boil, reduce heat to low. Stir in flour with a wooden spoon until dough starts to come away from the sides of the pot. Transfer dough to a mixer.

Mix dough on med speed until it cools a bit, then slow it down and begin to add the eggs. You want to add the eggs until the dough is smooth, but still firm enough to pipe. If you take off the mixer paddle and flip it over, the dough should hold its peak, but the tip still soft enough to bend back to the paddle. It will usually take almost all the eggs, depending on the humidity and the heat it was cooked at.

Put your dough in a piping bag; if there is still choux left in the bowl be sure to cover it with a wet rag so it does not dry out. Then pipe the required shapes onto parchment for profiterole, éclair, St. Honore, etc. Brush with egg wash before baking and bake at 375 degrees F for the first 10 minutes.

DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR DURING THE FIRST 10 MINTUES OF BAKING!!

After the first 10 minutes, turn the oven down to 350 degrees F and bake until golden brown and fully cooked.

Remove from oven and cool.

You can then store in a container, freeze or fill  right away.

Filling options:

The sky’s the limit for filling these little bites of paradise, classic things like pastry cream, whipped cream are always delicious. Myself I really love using chocolate mousse, ice cream and even giving them a savory twist for an appetiser by using a ham or chicken mousse as well.

Author Bio:

Sarah Marsh was born in British Columbia, she’s only recently began her writing career finding it the perfect outlet for taking the edge off a nine to five job. She’s a science fiction and romance junkie and when her imagination started to take the characters she’d read about even further in their adventures she decided to try writing something of her own.

Her biggest weaknesses are animals of any kind…she even loves the ones that wake you up at four in the morning because they can almost see the bottom of their food dish. When it comes to life in general she’s a big believer that laughter is the best medicine and that there’s no such thing as too much love, which is why she’s such a sucker for a happy ending.
