RELEASE POINT by Maia Dylan @evernightpub @maiadylanauthor

RELEASE POINT – SNIPER TEAM BRAVO, 4

BLURB:

Snipers refer to a point where a decision made could change the course of a target’s journey, as the release point. When Maddox Devereaux walked away from Glenn Webster six months ago, he’d reached that point and the path he chose meant he could never go back.

Maddox headed into combat and eventually found himself being held captive and tortured in South America by the head of a drug cartel hell bent on revenge. For Maddox, he felt as if that might just be his penance.

Glenn was tired of his team thinking that he was broken. Yes he had been raped, yes it had been horrible, but he had found a way to deal with that. What he was finding hard to process was how he had pushed Maddox away right when he needed him most.

When they find out that Maddox is being held captive, Bravo do what they do best. They load up and go to war. Maddox comes home and it takes all of them to help him heal. Little do they know, they are now the ones being hunted.

Can Glenn and Maddox find their way back together, or will this release point result in an outcome neither of them will survive?

TEASER:

On the floor just inside the door, a man lay dead, a nasty looking knife wound at his temple. When Glenn’s gaze moved to the back of the room, he saw two men fully engaged in a knife battle. Both were bleeding heavily, but fighting with a confidence that spoke of hours of training. But only one of them was a man Glenn knew better than himself.

Glenn lifted his gun to put a bullet in the Hispanic man who was swinging his knife toward his spotter, but stopped when Maddox threw him a quick glance that gave Glenn pause. For whatever reason, Maddox needed to do this. Glenn cursed when Maddox moved with his opponent, putting his back toward Glenn. There were large strips of skin missing from his back, and huge, bleeding red welts. Add to that the knife wound Glenn had spotted on Maddox’s upper chest and the huge gash that marred his stomach, and he had no clue how he hell the man was still standing.

As he watched, Maddox’s opponent faked right in a move so obvious Glenn knew it was over. A split second later, Maddox cried out in triumph as he drove his knife to the hilt into the top of the other man’s skull. He was dead before he hit the ground. Maddox turned, swaying on his feet, his breathing heavy and fast.

The two of them stood in that hellhole, the smell of blood, and death thick in the air, and simply stared at each other. Maddox’s expression was one Glenn had never seen before. He had witnessed Maddox dispatch their enemies without any hesitation, doing what had to be done, but there was always a flicker of pain at having to take another man’s life. Especially in war when both were simply following the orders of others. In this moment, there was no remorse. No pain. No emotion whatsoever. It was as if Maddox had checked out.

Glenn stepped forward cautiously. “Maddox?” An ache appeared in the center of his chest when Maddox flinched.

“Am I dead?” Maddox asked in a stilted voice.

Glenn frowned. “Nah, man, you won that fight. You’re still standing.”

“Are you sure?” Maddox’s voice was slurred.

“Yeah, brother,” Marcel said from his position by the door. “You are definitely still standing, but we have no idea how the fuck you’re doing it.”

“Stubborn ass willpower would be my guess,” Dev growled as he strode forward, stepping past Glenn and approaching Maddox. Dev stopped immediately when Maddox shied away. “Maddox?”

“Why’re y’all here?”

Dev moved a step closer. “We’re here for you, dumb ass. You’re Bravo.”

Maddox shook his head. “No. Not Bravo. No absolution for me. I … failed–”

Five questions for the author

Q: Every book is special to an author.  What is it about this book that makes it special for you?

A:  This is the final book in this series of four, and this whole series was my first foray into MM’s. Maddox and Glenn were always going to be the most emotional journey in this series, but I never anticipated how it would affect the readers.  I have had more people asking about this book than any other in this series.

Q:  What was your favorite part of writing this book?

A:  Finally getting to see Maddox and Glenn work their way to an HEA.  They have intrigued me from the very beginning and seeing them get together was so rewarding.  As an author, you most definitely bond with your characters, and in this book, that bond was strong!

Q: Why do you always include a danger element to your books?

A: I write what I love to read. I love books that take you on a journey, but where the characters face a challenge that adds an element of urgency to them and to the book.  As a reader, there is nothing I like more than getting that goose bump, hair rising on the back of my neck feeling as I join the characters within the book I am reading on the journey to solve their mystery.  I want to give that to my readers.

Q: Do you have anything to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read you work?

A: If you have read any of my books, thank you so very much! It blows my mind that someone has actually read something that I wrote, but gosh I hope you enjoyed it!  Did you?  Please let me know, I find I suffer from a slight case of needy-nelly with my writing.  If you haven’t read my book, but you love erotic romance stories between strong men and an independent woman, where the path to their happily ever after can be a bumpy one, but there is always a happily ever after, and their love and laugher is real on every page, then you’ll find my books right up your alley!

TEASER:

Sliding into the booth, he passed Aiden his beer and checked his watch. It was almost seven-thirty. “I missed you like this.” Aiden’s amused voice had Nick looking up.

“Like what?”

“Nervous,” Aiden replied, and Nick felt a warmth rise in his neck and knew he was blushing. “God, you are even blushing. You were like this with me at the beginning, too.”

Nick scoffed and took a large slug of his beer. “And could you blame me? You were out of my league, and I knew it.”

“Hardly,” Aiden said with a shake of his head. “I might have outranked you, but I was never out of your league.”

“It wasn’t your rank that made me nervous, babe,” Nick said as he leaned forward. “You are hotter than hot, and I always thought you’d realized you could do better than me. Add to that your nature and your personality and you pack a pretty powerful punch.”

Aiden held Nick’s gaze for a moment then nodded. “I find it funny that I was thinking the exact same thing. Here you were, this powerful, forceful man, who wore authority like a goddamn jacket. That dominance and confidence that you exude is a real turn-on for me.”

Nick sat back and grinned. “Yeah, I kinda noticed how turned on you got when I ordered people around. I knew that you’d love it in the bedroom, too. And how right I was.”

The two of the laughed, then became aware that they were no longer alone almost at the exact same moment. Nick turned to the man who stood beside their table holding a beer in his hand, and a carefully blank expression.

“Hey, it’s good to see you,” Aiden said first and slid further into his side of the booth. “Have a seat.”

Sam hesitated for a moment, and Nick shot a quick glance to Aiden. He had no idea what the hell was going through the man’s head, but Sam seemed like he regretted having turned up. Sam’s face cleared to a friendly expression, a smile on his handsome face, but it didn’t reach his brown eyes.

“Good to see you, too.” Even Sam’s tone sounded off to Nick, and his frown deepened. “The rest of the team are just coming in, and Dev wants to catch up on some business stuff, so I thought I’d come over and say hey. Sorry, I can’t join you for that drink, but maybe some other time.”

Nick caught Aiden’s look of confusion and knew that his lover was just as confused as he was on how to continue. So, Nick knew that if they were going to get to the bottom of Sam’s sudden change of heart, it would be up to him. He should probably go softly, try to coerce Sam into taking a seat and talking about things calmly, but that just wasn’t him.

“Sam, sit down in the booth.” Nick’s voice automatically dropped to the tone he employed when he was delivering his men’s orders. Sam’s eyes widened a little, but Nick noticed that his relaxed posture, as fake as it obviously was, because the man was anything but, seemed to snap taller as if he were standing at attention. “Now.”

Sam slid into the booth immediately and seemed both shocked to find himself sitting there and pissed off at himself for complying. “I really should—”

Nick figured Sam was about to launch into a reason why he should leave and cut him off before he could do it. “Unless the end of that sentence is ‘tell you both what was just going through my head’, then we don’t want to hear it.” Nick locked his gaze to Sam’s and held it.

Aiden chuckled, drawing his and Sam’s attention. “Christ, are you two gonna just stare at each other, waiting for the other to blink? Let me tell you something you might have suspected about the good sheriff here, Sam. He is stubborn as hell and won’t ever back down. Especially when it is in regards to someone he wants.”

Nick saw Sam shoot him a quick glance as if to see how he would react to Aiden saying Sam was someone that Nick wanted, but his expression remained clear. Aiden spoke the truth, and as soon as Sam came to realize that, the better.

Sam sat back in the chair, his eyes narrowing. “You know, I’m a Marine rifleman. I can be pretty damn stubborn myself.”

Nick grinned. “Hell, I know that. Aiden and I witnessed that in Afghanistan, but this is different. I want you enough to fight to get you to tell me what happened between the phone call this afternoon, and you standing by this booth tonight. And I reckon you want me and Aiden enough to put aside that stubborn streak of yours and tell us. The attraction we had for each other was immediate and off the charts. The night the three of us got together was pretty fucking powerful, too. Aiden and I want the chance to see if the three of us can have that with you on a more permanent basis, and I reckon that phone call this afternoon, and the fact that you’re sitting with us now, means that you do, too.”

Nick waited, and hoped like hell he was right.

Q:  What was your favorite part of writing this book?

A:  Learning more about Sam.  In book two we learn that he, Nick and Aiden had met before, and in this story we find out how they met.  And what an explosive start to a relationship that is!

Q: Why do you always include a danger element to your books?

TEASER EXCERPT:

“So, this is where you’ve been hiding.”

Marcel looked up at the sound of the voice, and his gaze locked with Riley’s, who was leaning on the door jamb of the room Marcel had turned into a makeshift office. It had been four days since the incident with the I-beam, and Marcel hadn’t realized how much he’d missed simply looking at Riley. The cowboy construction worker was dressed in a tight white t-shirt, jeans covered with construction dust, a well-worn pair of steel cap work boots, and the ever-present black Stetson.

Marcel sat back in the kitchen chair he’d snagged to work in and crossed his arms over his chest. “Saying that I was hiding would imply that I either A, had a reason to hide, which could imply guilt of some description. Or B, there was something or someone I was avoiding and was indeed seeking a place in which to hide. Now, as I am neither guilty of anything, nor am I avoiding anyone in particular, then I can assure you that I have not been hiding.”

Riley pushed off the doorjamb with a grin and walked into the room. “Then I guess I was wrong.” Marcel quirked an eyebrow and sent the man a pointed look, making Riley wince sheepishly. “Yeah, okay, not the first time I said the wrong thing to you. And that was what I wanted to come and talk to you about. And to apologize for.”

Marcel grinned back and leaned forward in his chair, placing his elbows on the desk in front of him. “Really? Well, in that case, please go right ahead. I am, as they say, all ears?”

Riley moved closer to the opposite side of the desk and placed both fists on the surface, leaning forward. “That’s good, because I wouldn’t want to have to do this twice. When you came onto the site the other day, I should have called you back and explained that the site was now locked down. I failed in my duty as foreman to do that, because, well, to be perfectly honest, I was too busy looking at your ass and imagining it bare for my viewing pleasure as you walked away from me to think about what you weren’t wearing on the top half of your body.”

Marcel blinked slowly as shock filled his system. He had known that Riley was attracted to him. He wasn’t blind to the way the man watched him, and Marcel sure as hell wasn’t immune to Riley either. But this was the first time either of them had actually spoken about that attraction out loud.

“When Dale called out that there was movement in the chain holding the ridge I-beam and I looked up, I knew it was coming down. From my vantage point, I could see that it was going to land on you. I dropped what I was carrying and sprinted for you. I was so fucking scared that I wasn’t going to get there in time. Then, when I tackled you, if you had resisted at all both of us could have ended up seriously injured, but instead you rolled with me, which I am extremely grateful for.”

Marcel shrugged. “That’s what we’re trained to do.”

“Yeah, and that leads me into the apology portion of my visit today.” Riley leaned in slightly. “I am really sorry for what I said to you. I never meant to imply that you were an idiot and that shit about you lacking reflexes was a total pile of bullshit. All I can say is that I was acting out of fear, and if I had been thinking I would have caught myself before I shoved my foot so far down my throat I could kick my own ass.”

Marcel huffed a laugh. “You certainly have a way with words.”

Riley sent him a cocky grin that had excitement fluttering in Marcel’s belly. “Wait until I’m convincing you to go to bed with me, then you’ll get a real good understanding of just how good I can be with words.”

Five questions for the author

Q: Every book is special to an author.  What is it about this book that makes it special for you?

A:  This is the second book in a series of four and it all stemmed from an image I found that sparked my interest.  That is one of the very real reasons I love writing! You find inspiration everywhere and a story idea can strike at any time.

Q:  Sometimes things happen when you are writing a series that wasn’t expected at all.  Have you had this happen to you?

A:  Heaps!  I am not a planner.  I am a write-by-the-set-of-your-panties kinda girl.  There have been moments where I will finish up a scene and be like WTF?  I did not see that coming!  This whole series started with an image I found that I simply couldn’t let go of.

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: I have book nine of the Grey River series, as well as book three in the Sniper Team Bravo series.  There is also a new Shifter Ménage series coming soon and a standalone MM as well.  Soooo many stories to tell, so little time!

The story…

TEASER:

Forgetting all of his training and everything he should have done next to ensure the safety of his team, Devon ran forward, dropping to his knees beside the prone figure. “Oh, shit, Finn.” There was no missing the fear in his voice. With hands that shook, he checked for a pulse and breathed a sigh of relief at the rhythmic thumps he felt against his fingers.

As gently as he could, Devon rolled Finn onto his back, and his breath caught at the sight of swelling and bruising around his left eye. “Jesus Christ, Finn, what the hell happened?” Devon ran his hands over his skull, searching for any contusions or swelling that could indicate a head injury or concussion. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found nothing.

Finn moaned, and his eyes fluttered open, and not for the first time, Devon found himself drowning in his beautiful green eyes and wondering why in the hell Finn was in the house. “Dev?” Finn asked in a weak voice. An ache settled in his chest. He had heard that voice in his dreams on so many nights, but hearing it now, weak with pain rather than passion, just about killed him.

“Yeah, Finn, it’s me,” Dev answered as he swept a lock of Finn’s dark hair from his forehead. “Where else does it hurt, baby? I want to get you up onto the bed so Sam can get a look, but I don’t want to hurt you.” A flash of hurt that Devon knew had nothing to do with his injuries flickered in Finn’s eyes before his anger apparently rose to mask it.

“It’s none of your concern where the pain is, and I sure as hell am not your baby,” Finn said, sneering the last word and Devon nodded. He understood Finn’s anger and accepted it to a point.

“LT, Sam’s headed out to your truck to grab his med kit,” Marcel said from the door. “You need any help getting Finn up onto the bed?”

Devon looked in earnest at Finn whose eyes narrowed, attempting to read his mood. “No, Marcel, I do not need any help getting Finn into bed. I can do that all on my own,” he said with a bit of humor.

Finn growled over the guys’ laughter in the background. “Get the hell away from me, Devon Roberts, I can make it to the bed myself.” Finn gritted his teeth and rolled to his side, a groan of pain caused any humor on Dev’s part to evaporate. Frowning, Devon swiftly swept Finn up and into his arms, wincing at his quick inhalation of breath.

Devon moved swiftly to the bed, waiting while Marcel removed the dust cloth, then laid Finn down on the quilt, absently noting that it was the same damn one he had used all those years ago. “Stop it!” Devon ordered as Finn started to struggle to stand. “Stay there, Finn, and let Sam have a look at you.” Sam put his med kit on the bed and opened it, but Finn kept trying to stand. Devon reached out a hand and gently gripped his chin, tilting Finn’s face up so that their gazes locked together.

“I mean it, Finn. Stop trying to move around, and let Sam have a look at you. Once we have you all squared away, you are going to tell me what the fuck happened.” A red hue rose up Finn’s face and his gaze slid away, but Devon gently turned his face so Finn had no choice but to look at him once more. “You are going to tell me who did this to you, Finn. I know what being beaten looks like, and you will tell me who turned their fists on you.”

“What do you care, Dev?” Finn’s expression turned bleak and he kept his voice low, obviously uncomfortable with the attention, and Devon’s heart ached even more. “You’ve had eight years to pick up the phone and see how I was doing. Now, last time I checked my cell phone, I hadn’t missed any calls so I figure you didn’t really give a shit. So why bother now?”

Five questions for the author

Q: Every book is special to an author. What is it about this book that makes it special for you?

A: This is my first MM.  I have loved this genre from the first time I read Stormy Glenn, Sam Crescent and Cree Storm.  There is something about the powerful expressions and imagery you can create with the scenes are between two male characters, especially the hot scenes!

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: I have book eight of the Grey River series over half way, as well as book two in the Sniper Team Bravo series. There is also a new Shifter Ménage series coming soon and a standalone MM as well. Soooo many stories to tell, so little time!

I personally can’t wait to dig into this new series, I’ve read her Grey River and Freedom Springs series and I can definitely say that Maia never disappoints!

Maia Dylan lives, loves and works in beautiful New Zealand. She married her best friend and they have two adorable, but stubborn children who obviously take after their father.

Maia’s career has featured a lot of travel, and she has filled her time at airports and in the air with books, books and more books. Her love of erotic paranormal romance has seen her amass a huge library.  She has been an avid reader and lover of ménage romances since she read her first book in this genre about three years ago.

Outside of writing, Maia loves to eat, so she loves to cook! Her herb garden is legendary, but she still has issues getting tomatoes to grow.  She’s been a performer for years, and has even sung on international stages, she would love to own a classic Ford Mustang one day and of course have the opportunity to race it on a race track without fear of a speeding ticket.

Although ultimately her dream is to be able to write full time on a sandy beach with a Mai Tai at hand, she is quite happy to fit her writing in when she can. As long as someone reads her books, gets a laugh and maybe come to love her characters and much as she does, then she feels that she is living her dreams no matter what!
